Biletnikoff Inducted into MESHOF

Raiders Legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff was inducted into the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony Friday night.

Raiders Legend and Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff was inducted into the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony Friday night in downtown Oakland. Former Raiders head coach Tom Flores presented Biletnikoff for induction. He joins fellow Raiders Flores, Willie Brown, George Atkinson, Cliff Branch, and Ray Chester in the Multi-Ethnic Hall of Fame.

According to the official web site, “The Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame was established in 2000 in Oakland, California to broaden the public understanding of African American and ethnic history and the role of diversity and cultural tolerance in the growth of professional sports.”

“I am honored to be honored here tonight. It's a great privilege to be inducted,” Biletnikoff said during his acceptance speech. “I can remember what the city of Oakland meant to all of us and what all of you meant to all of us with your support of the Oakland Raiders over the years. My heart is in Oakland. I love Oakland. Oakland is the best place I've ever known.”

Flores, who won Super Bowls as a player, assistant coach and head coach, presented Biletnikoff for induction.

"I had the privilege of playing with him and I had the privilege of coaching him. So I've watched him mature through the years as a player, as a person, as a father. Then he turned out to be a real good coach,” Flores told the assembled guests. “He's [done] the whole cycle, doing charity work now. He and his wife Angela are doing a phenomenal job in that foundation for their daughter Tracey. How many people are in the [Pro Football] Hall of Fame, have a college award named after him and live in the Bay Area. Remarkable guy, remarkable career, very well deserving of this honor."

Biletnikoff played in 190 regular games with 144 starts and caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 TDs. He was named the MVP of Super Bowl XI as the Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

And now, Biletnikoff can add induction into the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame to an already impressive list of accomplishments.
