The Oakland Raiders take on the Detroit Lions Saturday, August 25 at 4 p.m. PT. The game will mark just the sixth preseason contest between the two teams with the Raiders holding a 4-1 mark against Detroit in the all-time preseason series.
The Raiders have the advantage in regular season match ups (6-5) against the Lions as well. The Raiders first faced the Lions in Detroit in 1970. The Silver and Black most recently played the Lions at O.co Coliseum on December 18, 2011, in which QB
Coach and record: The Lions are led by Jim Schwartz, who is in his fourth year as Detroit’s head coach. After finishing his first season as head coach with a 2-14 record in 2009, he helped lead the Lions to a 10-6 record in 2011 and make it to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Last five preseason match ups:On August 25, 2006, the Raiders hosted the Lions, beating Detroit by a score of 21-3. WR Randy Moss caught three passes for 102 yards and two TDs and RB Justin Fargas had 10 carries for 62 yards.
The Raiders first met the Lions in the preseason in 1974 and won 41-10. They faced Detroit the following preseason in 1975, emerging with a 34-0 win. The Silver and Black didn’t face the Lions in the preseason again until 1982 when they traveled to Detroit and fell 30-16.
The Raiders vs. Lions match-up will be the first game after the close of the Raiders 2012 Training Camp in Napa. It is the final game before the roster is cut down to 75.
The Lions current defensive coordinator, Gunther Cunningham, was a coach with the Los Angeles Raiders for four years (1991-1994). He served one year as linebackers coach, two as defensive coordinator and one as defensive line coach. During his time as Raiders defensive coordinator, the Raiders defense ranked in the Top 10.
