The Oakland Raiders defeated the Dallas Cowboys 19-17 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland in the preseason opener for the Silver and Black.

The Oakland Raiders defeated the Dallas Cowboys 19-17 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland in the preseason opener for the Silver and Black. QBs Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor each accounted for field goals, and rookies Matt McGloin and Brice Butler connected on a 30-yard TD strike as Butler made an acrobatic catch.

The Raiders won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. WR/KR Josh Cribbs fielded the opening kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback. The Raiders started at the 20 with Matt Flynn at quarterback.

The Raiders managed one first down before Flynn was sacked and fumbled. LB Sean Lee made the hit. The Cowboys recovered at the Raiders 16. Thanks to a holding call on the Cowboys and a sack by rookie LB Sio Moore, Dallas faced 3rd and 25 at the Oakland 31. QB Tony Romo found WR Miles Austin for 11 yards and the field goal unit came on. K Dan Bailey’s 38-yard field goal gave the Cowboys a 3-0 lead with 10:51 left in the 1st quarter.

Cribbs returned the ensuing kickoff 23 yards to the 18. The Raiders drive stalled and K Sebastian Janikowski came on for a 51-yard field goal attempt. The successful kick tied the game 3-3 with 4:02 left 1st quarter.

Dwayne Harris returned the ensuing kickoff to the Dallas 17 where he was dropped by safety Usama Young. The Cowboys drive stalled at the Oakland 8. Raiders SS Tyvon Branch blocked the Bailey field goal attempt, LB Nick Roach caught it out of the air and returned it 19 yards. A penalty during the return backed the Raiders up to the 10.

Terrelle Pryor took over at quarterback for the Raiders. The Raiders drove deep into Cowboys territory but Pryor threw late over the middle in the end zone and J.J. Wilcox intercepted it. Dallas took over at the 20.

Kyle Orton took over at quarterback for Dallas. Orton led the Cowboys on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, which he capped with a 15-yard TD pass to WR Cole Beasley. The extra point was good and Dallas led 10-3 with 41 seconds left in the 2nd quarter.

CB Taiwan Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the Oakland 24. Pryor answered with a scoring drive of his own as Janikowski connected on a 40-yard FG attempt to cut the Cowboys lead to 10-6 and end the first half.

K Eddy Carmona’s opening kickoff of the second half was returned by WR Anthony Armstrong to the Dallas 29. QB Nick Stephens’ first pass was picked off by safety Usama Young and returned 21 yards to the Dallas 29. Matt McGloin took over at quarterback.

The Raiders were unable to move the ball and Carmona came on for the field goal attempt. The 42-yard kick was good and the Raiders cut the Dallas lead to 10-9 with 12:23 left in the 3rd quarter.

Beasley returned Carmona’s ensuing kickoff 28 yards to the Dallas 30. The Raiders defense forced a three-and-out and CB Phillip Adams returned the Chris Jones punt 4 yards to the Oakland 19.

McGloin capped the 5-play, 81-yard scoring drive with a beautiful 30-yard TD pass to diving rookie WR Brice Butler. Carmona’s extra point was good and gave the Raiders a 16-10 lead with 8:54 left in the 3rd quarter.

Joseph Randle returned the ensuing kickoff to the Dallas 26. The Cowboys drive stalled at the Raiders 41. Jones’ punt was fair caught by Adams and former Raiders safety Eric Frampton hit Adams anyway drawing penalty flags for a personal foul. The Raiders took over at their own 29.

The Cowboys held the Raiders to a three-and-out and Chris Kluwe’s 36-yard punt was downed at the Dallas 28.

The Cowboys tied the game at 16-16 with a 1-yard Randle TD plunge after a 14-play, 72-yard march and Bailey’s PAT was good. The visitors led 17-16 with 11:07 left in the game.

WR Greg Jenkins returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards to the Cowboys 49. Tyler Wilson entered the game at quarterback. A sack and a holding penalty brought up 2nd and 27.  The Raiders were unable to overcome the misfortune and Marquette King came on to punt. B.W. Webb muffed the punt and LB Eric Harper recovered at the Dallas 9.

The Raiders were unable to punch it in and Carmona came on for the chip shot field goal attempt. The 23-yard kick was good and the Raiders took at 19-17 lead with 8:11 left in the 4th quarter.

Randle returned the ensuing kickoff to the Dallas 23. Alex Tanney entered the game at quarterback and the Raiders forced a three-and-out. Greg Jenkins fielded the bouncing punt and returned it to the Raiders 32.

The Raiders drove into Dallas territory and Carmona missed a 46-yard FG attempt. Dallas took over at the 36. The Raiders forced a 4-and-out and Wilson took a knee on two consecutive plays to secure the victory.

The Raiders are 1-0 on the preseason and will travel to New Orleans to face the Saints in 2013 Preseason Week 2 action Friday night.
