Raiders vs Colts Through the Decades

Posted Aug 31, 2013

The Raiders open the 2013 Regular Season against the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Oakland Raiders will hit the road in Week 1 as they take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, September 8 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The 2013 meeting will mark the 13th time the teams have met, with the Raiders holding the all-time series record 7-5. While the Colts and the Raiders have met fewer times, the series has still consisted of hotly contested match-ups since their inaugural meeting in 1971.

1970s – 1980s

The Raiders first met the Baltimore Colts on November 28, 1971. The decade of the 70s proved to be a critical one for the Raider faithful. The Silver and Black traveled to meet the Colts for the second time in the 1973 season. The Raiders came away with a victory in convincing fashion with a score of 34-21. The defensive showcase proved the Raiders strength, as they didn't surrender a point through the first half. A 32-yard rushing touchdown from Clarence Davis left the Raiders on top, as they toppled opponents on their way to a third AFC West title.

The Raiders once again faced the Colts the 1975 season during Week 2. The Raiders led the entire game coming away triumphant with a 31-20 win, while once again taking control of the AFC Western Division and vying for a AFC Championship that postseason.

After the 1977 season, the Raiders defeated the Colts in the AFC playoffs in double-overtime classic in what became known as the "Ghost to the Post" game.

The Raiders entered the 1984 season as the reigning Super Bowl Champions. The Raiders and the Colts had relatively new homes when they faced each other that year as the Raiders had moved down south to Los Angeles in 1982, and the Colts were heading out west to Indianapolis. The 1984 matchup marked the first time the Colts had met the Silver and Black in Los Angeles. The Raiders took away a victory with a score of 21-7.

1990s-2000s

The Raiders entered the 1991 season as the defending AFC Western Division champs, the matchup that season between the Silver and Black and the Colts would be the sixth time the two teams had met. The Raiders took care of the Colts by blanking them 16-0. The Raiders returned to Oakland preceding the 1995 season. The Silver and Black once again were victorious, 30-17, on their home field.

The 2000 Raiders traveled to Indianapolis in Week 2 of the regular season to face the Colts. The September afternoon game proved to be a showdown as the Colts took control quickly taking a 24-7 lead heading into halftime. But the Raiders demonstrated their resilience scoring 31 points in the second half. A 23-18 victory over the Colts in the 2001 season would spur the Silver and Black to a second consecutive AFC Western Division Championship.

2010s

The 2013 edition of the Raiders-Colts match-up will look to be the start of new things for the Raiders. This year’s matchup will be the first time the Silver and Black will play at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, which opened in 2008 and hosted Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. The Raiders are looking to end a three-game losing streak that dates back to 2004— the last time Oakland visited Indianapolis.
