Posted Oct 14, 2013

The Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers will meet in Oakland for the second straight season.

The Oakland Raiders will be renewing their rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Oakland on October 27 for the second-consecutive year and the 23rd overall time since their first match-up almost exactly 43 years ago on October 25, 1970.

The Silver and Black lead the series 11-9, including an 8-5 record as the home team. The Raiders currently hold a 6-3 record against the Steelers in Oakland and held a 2-2 record while calling Los Angeles home from 1982 to 1994.

The Raiders have not lost a game to the Steelers at the Coliseum since 1995 and have a 4-4 record since the turn of the century. Since the Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, the Raiders have a 3-2 record including 2-0 in Oakland. The Steelers and Head Coach Mike Tomlin have only been able to top the Raiders one time since they won Super Bowl XL.

1970s

When the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the Raiders and Steelers played 11 times including five playoff games against one another. At the end of the 70s, the Raiders led the regular season series 5-3, and 2-1 in regular season games in Oakland.

1980s and 90s

The Raiders and Steelers did not meet as frequent during the 1980s. During this decade, the two teams only played three regular season games and one playoff game, in which the Los Angeles Raiders defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 38-10 in the AFC Divisional Playoff game on New Year’s Day 1984. The Raiders would go on to win Super Bowl XVIII two games later against the Washington Redskins. The Raiders would only face the Steelers one more time during the 80s in the 1984 regular season finale.

The Raiders only played three games against the Steelers in the 1990s, all of which were in the state of California. The Black and Silver won the first game in 1990 but fell to the Steelers in the 1994 and 1995 matchups.

2000s and 2010s

Towards the beginning of the 2000 season, the Raiders traveled to Pittsburgh for the first time in 20 years and began a more frequent rivalry, which saw the two teams play six times during the 2000s.

Since 1995, the Steelers have not been able to stop the Raiders in three attempts at the Coliseum, and Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has only defeated the Silver and Black twice in his five meetings against the Raiders since 2004.
