The Oakland Raiders currently hold three first-round selections in the 2019 National Football League Draft, which kicks off Thursday in Nashville. Although holding three selections in the first round may seem a bit unusual, it's not the first time the Raiders have done so.
In the 1988 NFL Draft, the Raiders held the 6th, 9th and 25th overall picks and suffice to say, came away with some pretty good productivity.
Heisman Trophy-winner, wide receiver **Tim Brown** out of Notre Dame, went to the Raiders at No. 6, Tennessee cornerback **Terry McDaniel** went 9th overall, and defensive lineman **Scott Davis** out of Illinois went 25th.
Brown went on to become the Silver and Black's all-time leading receiver with 1,070 catches for 14,734 yards and 99 touchdown receptions. He is also the team's all-time leading punt returner with 320 returns for 3,272 yards and three touchdowns. The Raiders 5th all-time leading scorer put 626 points on the board receiving, rushing, returning punts, returning kickoffs and on a two-point conversion. Brown also played in 12 playoff games with nine starts and caught 45 passes for 581 yards and three touchdowns. The nine-time Pro Bowl selection was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
McDaniel played in 143 games with 137 starts from 1988 to 1997. His 34 interceptions rank third all-time in Raiders history. McDaniel returned five of those interceptions for touchdowns. He also forced five fumbles, recovered seven and returned two of those for touchdowns. The five-time Pro Bowler started all five playoff games he played in. McDaniel was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week three times.
Davis didn't play nearly as long or enjoy the success Brown and McDaniel did. However, he did record a double-digit sack season with 10 quarterback takedowns in 1990. In all, Davis played in 75 games with 47 starts from 1988-1991, 1994, and recorded 27.5 sacks and one fumble recovery. He also played in and started three postseason games, chalking up two sacks in a 1991 playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
We'll see very soon what the Raiders three first round selections in the 2019 NFL Draft bring to the table. The 1988 first round picks played in over 450 games, made the Pro Bowl 14 times, made 20 playoff game appearances and produced a Hall of Famer. This year's haul would do well to follow in those footsteps.
