Cody Grimm joins the Raiders in 2026 as a defensive quality control coach, bringing with him nine seasons of coaching experience, including five years in the NFL ranks along with three years of experience as a player. Grimm most recently spent two seasons (2022-23) as the safeties coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, coaching a unit that helped the Jaguars record 30 total interceptions over his two seasons with the team, tied for the seventh most in the NFL over that span.
In his second season in Jacksonville, his unit was led by S Rayshawn Jenkins, who finished with seven tackles for loss, tied for fifth in the NFL among defensive backs. Jenkins also added 100 tackles, 1.0 sack, nine passes defensed and two interceptions. In 2023, Jacksonville defensive backs combined for 14 interceptions, tied for the sixth most in the NFL among secondary units. In his first season in Jacksonville in 2022, he coached a unit that led the NFL for a combined 23 passes defensed. Among safeties, Jenkins led the league with 12 passes defensed and Andre Cisco ranked third with 10 passes defensed. Cisco also recorded a 59-yard interception return that ranked as the ninth-longest in the NFL last season.
Before his time with the Jaguars, Grimm spent three seasons (2019-21) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive assistant, working with a unit that ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in several categories over his three seasons with the team, including first in run defense (82.5), first in yards per carry allowed (3.7), ninth in total yards allowed per game (334.1), seventh in third down defense (37.6%) and sixth in red zone defense (54.7%).
Before joining the NFL coaching ranks, Grimm was a defensive quality control coach at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, for four seasons (2014-17). In 2017, serving as quality control/defense coach, Grimm tutored a defense led by LB Tremaine Edmunds, who earned third-team AP All-America honors, and third-team All-ACC S Terrell Edmunds, who helped guide the Hokies to a 9-4 mark. The duo later became the first brothers in history to be selected in the first round of the same NFL Draft.
PERSONAL: A native of Fairfax, Va., Grimm lettered four years (2006-09) as a linebacker at Virginia Tech, where he joined the team as a walk-on…As a senior, Grimm led the nation with seven forced fumbles and amassed 106 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, earning First Team All-ACC and Third Team AP All-America honors…Grimm was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers, where he played three seasons at safety...In his career, Grimm appeared in 23 games with 12 starts, totaling 62 tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions and one interception returned for a touchdown.
