Rookie Safety Obi Melifonwu Headed To Reserve/Injured List

Head Coach Jack Del Rio announced Friday that Obi Melifonwu was headed to the Reserve/Injured list.

After appearing in five games, and totaling six tackles, Obi Melifonwu’s rookie season in Silver and Black looks to be over, according to Head Coach Jack Del Rio.

“Obi actually had surgery yesterday, and will be out, and will end on IR [Injured Reserve], and [cornerback] [Antonio] Hamilton will come up and play for us,” said Head Coach Del Rio during his Friday press conference at the team’s Alameda, Calif., facility.

The Oakland Raiders selected the athletic defensive back in the second round (No. 56 overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft, but after dealing with injury early in the season, he was placed on the Reserve/Injured List September 5.

Melifonwu returned to practice October 17, was activated back to the active roster November 4, and eventually played in five games before his season prematurely came to an end.

The former UConn Husky’s bulk of work came in the Raiders Week 11 loss to the New England Patriots where he played 26 defensive snaps, but since then, Melifonwu appeared primarily on special teams.
