Not everyone gets to land a date with a gold medalist Olympian, but Raiders tight end Colton Underwood made it possible. Saturday evening, Underwood made the bold decision to send gymnast Aly Raisman a video asking her out on a date, and it paid off.

Raisman first appeared in the 2012 London Olympics, and after earning a gold medal in the women’s team all-around competition, and achieving individual silver medals in women’s floor exercise and women’s individual all-around in Rio de Janeiro, she has received a plethora of praise over the past several weeks.

The two were initially introduced through Raiders long snapper Andrew East and his wife Shawn Johnson, also a gold medal gymnast. Although Raisman and Underwood have agreed to go on a date, he’ll have to wait a little bit as she finishes up her Olympic tour.

Tuesday, before the team hit the practice field, Head Coach Jack Del Rio and quarterback Derek Carr shared their thoughts on Underwood’s video.

“I mean we have a celebrity in our midst,” joked Del Rio. “It’s amazing how things get traction. I think young men doing what young men do and [he] invited out a really decorated Olympian, so that’s a pretty neat story.”

“I was like, ‘Hey man, you put yourself out on a limb there, bro.’ (laughter) I’m just happy, I think [Head] Coach [Jack Del Rio] said it too, I’m happy for him that she said yes,” added Carr. “That’s a lonely feeling being out there on a limb, man. (laughter) I’m happy for him, and she made a good decision saying yes, because he’s a really good guy.”

While receiving a lot of attention, Underwood remains lighthearted says, “Once again, I want to congratulate them [Olympians] and put the spotlight back on them, they did a great job representing the United States.”
