I hope you got your mock drafts out the way, read your Training Camp Notebooks and have taken a close look at advanced analytics.
Because now it's time to draft a championship-winning fantasy football team.
I know a thing or two about winning, and losing, fantasy football championships. I've also had a good look at the Las Vegas Raiders this training camp and have seen a few players who would be legitimate options to draft this year.
Before I go into detail on those players, I'd like to give a couple honorable mentions. I believe Daniel Carlson will reclaim his status as one of the best kickers to draft to your roster. He made four field goals from 50+ yards this preseason. Also Michael Mayer could enjoy a breakout season, with the potential to be a reliable TE2 in deep format leagues.
With that being said, here's a look at three Raiders I believe are must-draft options in fantasy football this season.
Brock Bowers
- ESPN Fantasy Football Ranking: 20 (TE1)
- Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football Ranking: 19 (TE1)
Of the Raiders available to draft, Brock Bowers is my safest pick.
He's the undisputed No. 1 tight end in fantasy football this year after a historic rookie season in which he led the league in receiving yards (1,194) and receptions (112) among his position group. And based off what I've seen in camp, there's no sign of a sophomore slump in sight.
Bowers accounted for 25.8 percent of team's targets in 2024, which I honestly expect to decrease with Tre Tucker and Michael Mayer potentially seeing elevated roles, not to mention receivers Dont'e Thornton Jr. and Jack Bech being drafted. The addition of Geno Smith, who prides himself on stretching the field, could bring Bowers' game to new heights. The two connected for two touchdowns in the mock game in Allegiant Stadium plus a wild 28-yard gain in the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.
"I can't give him the ball enough. I feel bad every time I don't throw him the ball," Smith said earlier in camp. "So I'm just trying to make sure that I'm maximizing his ability, his talent, because that's going to help our team."
In all of the leagues I played in last year, the team that drafted Brock Bowers finished top 3 in the league. I even talked to Brock about this, and he laughed, telling me all his friends had drafted him in their leagues as well – quite literally enjoying the fruits of his labor.
Every year, there's always going to be one tight end deemed worthy of spending a mid to late first-round pick in fantasy football. When I was in high school, it was Jimmy Graham. When I was in college, it was Travis Kelce. But right now, it's No. 89 for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Ashton Jeanty
- ESPN Fantasy Football Ranking: 11 (RB5)
- Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football Ranking: 14 (RB5)
Ashton Jeanty seems to be a high risk, high reward fantasy pick.
The risk is obvious – he hasn't played a down in an NFL regular season game before. It's the same reason I told my friends last year that Bowers had mid-round value, but we all know how that turned out.
And to clarify, there's not necessarily a great risk in drafting Jeanty in general. The risk only revolves around his draft ranking in the majority of fantasy football platforms, as the only rookie who's a projected first-round pick. The world of fantasy football seemingly mirrors the Raiders' real life expectations of the No. 6 pick to rejuvenate a rushing attack that ranked last in the NFL in 2024.
But ohhh how that nice that reward could look.
Even with questions surrounding what his overall production will be, the one thing we do know is he'll be a high-volume player in Chip Kelly's offense. His workload will probably resemble that of the workhorse back with Raheem Mostert and Zamir White playing supporting roles. And if you're in a PPR league, that reward could be even grander. Kelly has said he expects Jeanty to be featured heavily in the pass game.
"I take a lot of pride in it. It's something that wasn't really shown as much in my college career," Jeanty said of his pass catching abilities. "So being able to have that opportunity, and Chip's done a great job at getting running backs involved in the passing game and we just got to continue to work at it and get better every single day."
I'd be stoked to find the rookie running back still available at the top of the second round.
Geno Smith
- ESPN Fantasy Football Ranking: 219 (QB26)
- Yahoo Sports Fantasy Football Ranking: 171 (QB22)
I'm personally of the draft strategy to load up on skill position players first, then go after a reliable quarterback in later rounds.
And if Geno Smith has proven to be anything over the last three seasons, it's reliable.
Last season, Smith scored 266 fantasy points in non-PPR leagues, ranking 14th among all quarterbacks. Granted, he's playing for a new team in a new offense, but his projections still seem low considering what we know he's capable of. Fantasy owners must've not been too ecstatic about his 15 interceptions in 2024, but he still reached career highs in passing yards with 4,320 and completion percentage at 70.4 (min. 100 pass attempts).
"Geno being here is such a positive factor for restarting this program," Pete Carroll said, "and not just because we were together and he extends the message. He is the message. He competes every single day, every step he takes."
Along with his new offensive weapons previously mentioned, Smith could see similar production with Tre Tucker and Dont'e Thornton Jr. as deep targets. There are fantasy analysts out there who believe Smith is a dark horse sleeper candidate and I would have to agree. I'd beg you to name 20 quarterbacks in the league better than Smith right now – in fantasy football or real life.
He should certainly be considered a high-end QB2 for most fantasy teams and even a starting option on a week-by-week basis.
