Staff Sergeant Richard C. Sherwood was the GovX Hero of the Game as the Raiders wrapped up the preseason on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks at O.co Coliseum.

Sherwood joined the Air Force in 2009, and after he completed basic training, he became an Air Transport Journeyman. He is currently a first-term Airman and works as a Shift Supervisor in the Special Handling section for the 60th Aerial Port Squadron at Travis Air Force Base.

Ssgt. Sherwood is also qualified as a Joint Inspector and a Hazardous Material Preparer and was deployed to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan in 2012 and 2014 and awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his meritorious service overseas.

The Alton, N.H.-native was on the sidelines prior to the game, and was excited to partake in the evening's festivities.

"It was great," Ssgt Sherwood said. "I was really excited for the experience and I was grateful for the nomination from my squadron to go do that. It was a very interesting event and something that was a very good experience that now I'll be able to tell people I got to do."

The Raiders are set to recognize a serviceman or woman prior to each home game in 2014, and are committed to honoring the men and women who help protect our freedom on a daily basis.
