Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will take over as offensive playcaller, Head Coach Pete Carroll announced Monday.

The team relieved Chip Kelly of his duties as offensive coordinator Sunday night.

"I hate that we had to do this at this time," Carroll said. "This is just uncharted waters, basically. We worked for a long time trying to come together and communicate so it fits the style of play that we want to play with and we didn't quite get it done."

Olson rejoined the Raiders this offseason as the team's quarterbacks coach. He is in his third stint with the Silver and Black, having previously served as OC from 2013-14 and 2018-21. Over the course of his career, Olson has also led offenses for the Detroit Lions (2005), St. Louis Rams (2006-07), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-16).

"He's got years of experience," Carroll said of Olson. "He's been a coordinator for 13 years in the league and we've been together before. He knows me inside and out. I think it's a really fortunate opportunity that we have a guy that has that much background to step into this role."

In 2023, Olson served as the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks and helped guide QB Geno Smith's continuing resurgence as a signal-caller. Smith earned his second-consecutive Pro Bowl selection, completing 64.7 percent of his passes (323-for-499) for 3,624 yards and 20 touchdowns.

In his last stint as offensive coordinator of the Raiders in the 2021 season, Olson directed a Raiders offense that ranked sixth in the NFL in passing (268.6 ypg) and 11th in total offense (363.8 ypg).
