Raiders Lose Heartbreaker to Chargers

The Raiders won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. CB TJ Carrie fielded K Nick Novak's opening kickoff 8 yards deep in the end zone and downed it for a touchback and the Raiders started at the 20 with rookie Derek Carr at quarterback. Carr went deep on 3rd and 7 and hit WR Andre Holmes for the 77-yard bomb and a touchdown. K Sebastian Janikowski added the extra point and the Raiders took a 7-0 lead with 14:08 left in the 1st quarter.

RB Branden Oliver fielded the ensuing kickoff 6 yards deep in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback. The Chargers started at the 20 with Philip Rivers at quarterback. Rivers answered with a 29-yard TD pass to WR Eddie Royal. The extra point was good and the Chargers tied the game 7-7 with 9:38 left in the 1st quarter.

Carrie fielded the ensuing kickoff 9 yards deep and downed it for a touchback and the Raiders started at the 20. The Raiders managed one first down before the Chargers forced a punt. Royal called for and made a fair catch of the P Marquette King 44-yard punt at the Chargers 17.

The Raiders forced a three-and-out thanks to a DE C.J. Wilson sack on 3rd and 2. Carrie returned P Mike Scifres 50-yard punt 19 yards to midfield. The Chargers forced a three-and-out and King came on to punt. Royal called for and made a fair catch at the San Diego 15.

Rivers orchestrated another scoring drive, hitting WR Malcolm Floyd on a 5-yard TD pass. The PAT was good and the Chargers took a 14-7 lead with 11:52 left in the 2nd quarter.

Carrie returned the ensuing kickoff 25 yards to the Oakland 24. Carr responded with an 11-play, 76-yard drive that he capped with a 6-yard TD pass to WR James Jones. Janikowski's PAT was good and the game was tied 14-14 with 7:25 left in the 2nd quarter.

Janikowski's kickoff went out of the back of the end zone for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20. The Raiders defense allowed one first down before forcing a punt. Carrie muffed Scifres punt but recovered at the Oakland 17.

The Raiders got into position for a 53-yard field goal attempt but the kick was no good and the teams went to the locker room tied at 14-14 at halftime.

The Chargers got the ball to start the 3rd quarter. Novak's 54-yard field goal was wiped out by a holding call and Scifres came on to punt on 4th and 30. A fake punt pass was incomplete and the Raiders took over at the Oakland 46.

The Raiders took advantage three plays later as Carr hit WR Brice Butler for the 47-yard catch and run for the score. The PAT was good and the Raiders took a 21-14 lead with 7:40 left 3rd quarter.

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff was downed for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20. The Chargers answers with an 8-play, 80-yard drive that Rivers capped with a 1-yard TD pass to TE Antonio Gates. The extra point was good and the game was tied at 21-21 with 2:52 left in the 3rd quarter.

Carrie returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to the Raiders 36. The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive and King came on to punt. King's punt was downed at the Chargers 10.

The Raiders forced a three and out and Scifres came on to punt. Carrie returned the punt 12 yards to midfield. Carr led a scoring drive as he connected with  Holmes again, this time from 6 yards out. The PAT was good and the Raiders led 28-21 with 10:01 left in the 4th quarter.

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff sailed out of the back of the end zone and the Chargers started their next possession at the 20. The Chargers were forced to settle for a 30-yard Novak field goal, which cut the Raiders lead to 28-24 with 5:52 left in the 4th quarter.Carrie returned the ensuing kickoff 22 yards to the Oakland 25. The Raiders went three and out and King was backed up for the punt after an intentional grounding call.  WR Keenan Allen returned the punt 29 yards to the Oakland 39.  The Chargers took a 31-28 lead with 1:56 left in the game on Oliver's 1-yard TD plunge.

The ensuing kickoff bounced through the end zone and the Raiders started at the 20. The Raiders hopes were dashed when CB Jason Verrett intercepted Carr's deep ball. Rivers kneeled down three times and killed the clock.

The Raiders fall to 0-5 on the season and host the Arizona Cardinals next week.
