The Chiefs won the opening kickoff and elected to defer their choice to the second half. CB Bryan McCann returned K Ryan Succop's opening kickoff 91 yards to the Chiefs 14. The Raiders were forced to settle for K Sebastian Janikowski's 28-yard field goal, which gave the Silver and Black a 3-0 lead with 13:20 left in the first quarter.
CB Javier Arenas fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback. QB Kyle Orton and the Chiefs started at their own 20. The Raiders allowed one first down on a RB Thomas Jones 22-yard run, but then forced a P Dustin Colquitt punt, which was downed at the Raiders 3.
The Raiders drive started promisingly but QB Carson Palmer was hit as he threw and a pass was intercepted by LB Derrick Johnson and returned to the Raiders 37. Nine plays and 31 yards later, Succop's 23-yard FG tied the game at 3-3 with 3:06 left in the 1st quarter.
McCann returned the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to the Raiders 34. The Raiders were forced to punt. Lechler's kick was downed at the Chiefs 5. The Raiders allowed one first down before forcing a Colquitt punt, which was returned to the Raiders 32.
On 4th and 1 the Raiders attempted a fake field goal that would have gone for a touchdown but the play was wiped out by a delay of game penalty. Janikowski then hit the crossbar with a 58-yard FG attempt and Kansas City took over at their own 48.
The Chiefs drove deep into Raiders territory but S Matt Giordano picked off an Orton pass in the end zone and returned the interception 62 yards to the Chiefs 40. Arenas got it right back for the Chiefs with an interception and a return to the Kansas City 38.
After a bizarre sequence involving several penalties on both teams, Succop came on a for a 49-yard field goal attempt which was blocked by DT Richard Seymour, recovered by Giordano and returned to the Chiefs 40 as the half came to an end.
The Chiefs got the ball to start the second half and the Raiders promptly forced a punt. After the return and a penalty, the Raiders took over at their own 21. A few plays later, Palmer threw a 61-yard TD pass to WR Denarius Moore, the extra point was good and the Raiders led 10-3 with 8:52 left 3rd quarter.
Janikowski's ensuing kickoff flew out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Chiefs responded with a scoring drive capped off by a 20-yard Succop field goal that cut the Raiders lead to 10-6 with 3:30 left in the 3rd quarter.
McCann fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback and the Raiders started at their own 20. The Chiefs held the Raiders to a three and out and Lechler came on to punt. Lechler crushed a 76-yard punt that bounced into the end zone for a touchback. The Chiefs next drive was derailed by Raiders CB Stanford Routt who picked off an Orton pass. After the return and a penalty on the Chiefs, the Raiders took over at their 38.
The Raiders went three and out and the Chiefs took over at the their own 10 after a fair catch. The Chiefs faced 4th and inches at their own 44 and RB Jackie Battle was stopped cold and the Raiders took over on downs.
Janikowski capped an 8-play, 30-yard drive with a 31-yard FG that gave the Raiders a 13-6 lead with just under three minutes to play.
After the kickoff and a touchback, the Chiefs went 80 yards and tied the game with an Orton to WR Dwayne Bowe 3-yard TD pass and the subsequent extra point with 1:02 to go.
The ensuing kickoff went for a touchback and the Raiders started at their own 20. The Raiders went three and out and Lechler came on to punt. Arenas returned the punt to the Chiefs 33. The Chiefs got into field goal range and Succop's 49-yard attempt was blocked by Seymour and the game went to overtime.
Janikowski's 36-yard game-winning field goal attempt was set up by a 53-yard strike from Palmer to WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. The kick was true and the Raiders won 16-13.
The Raiders improve to 8-7, move into a tie for first place with Denver in the AFC West standings and conclude the 2011 regular season at home against the San Diego Chargers on New Year's Day.
