RB Clarence Davis runs the ball against the then-Los Angeles Rams.
You would think that by virtue of geography alone, the Raiders and the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams would have met more than 12 times during the regular season. However, since the two teams are in different conferences, despite sharing a locale, they have only played each other a dozen times with the Raiders holding an 8-4 all-time series advantage. The Raiders and Rams only met five times while they both called Los Angeles home. The teams have met 18 times in the preseason, with the Raiders leading that series 11-7. This will be the Silver and Black's fourth trip overall to face the Rams in St. Louis.
After the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Raiders and Rams met in the preseason four straight years from 1970-73, and a total of nine times during the 1970s. The two teams first met in the regular season in 1972 with the Raiders winning 45-17 in Oakland. The Rams claimed the next regular season match-up, 20-14, in 1977 in Los Angeles. The Raiders snapped back with a 24-17 win in Oakland in 1979.
During the '80s, both franchises called Los Angeles home and they met a total of three times with the Raiders winning two. The Raiders won the first battle of L.A., 37-31, at the Raiders L.A. Coliseum home in 1982, and the second in 1985, 16-6, in Anaheim. The Rams earned a 22-17 win in 1988, at the Coliseum. The teams did not play each other during the preseason in the '80s.
The teams would once again meet three times in the regular season during a decade with the Silver and Black prevailing in all three match-ups. The Raiders dropped the Rams 20-17 in 1991 at the L.A. Coliseum, 20-17 in 1994 in Anaheim, and 35-17 in 1997 at the Oakland Coliseum. The team met five times in the '90s, with the Raiders winning four.
St. Louis has won two of the last three match-ups. The Rams topped the Raiders 28-13 at the Edward Jones Dome in 2002, and 20-0 in 2006 at the Oakland Coliseum. The Raiders won the last regular season meeting in 2010, 16-14, in Oakland. Since 2000, the Raiders and the Rams have met four times in the preseason with the Raiders taking three.
