Seahawks Top Raiders 31-21

The Seattle Seahawks defeated The Oakland Raiders 31-21 at Qwest Field in Seattle in the 2009 pre-season finale. RB Louis Rankin paced the Raiders with six carries for 60 yards and a 45-yard TD run. Gary Russell carried the ball 12 times for 59 yards and 2 TDs.

The Seahawks won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. K Sebastian Janikowski's kickoff was fielded and downed in the end zone for a touchback. The Seahawks picked up a first down on two RB Edgerrin James runs, but the Raiders defense forced a punt. P Jon Ryan's 56-yard punt was downed at the Raiders 8.

The Raiders offense took the field with JaMarcus Russell at quarterback. The Seahawks held the Raiders to a three-and-out and P Ricky Schmitt came on to punt. After a short return or the 47-yard punt, Seattle's offense took the field at their own 48.

Mike Teel replaced Matt Hasselbeck at quarterback. Teel found WR Deon Butler for a 22-yard touchdown pass to cap at 4-play, 52-yard drive that took 1:30 off the clock. Olindo Mare's extra point gave Seattle a 7-0 lead with 8:13 left in the first quarter.

After WR Nick Miller returned the ensuing kickoff 51 yards to the Raiders 46, Jeff Garcia entered the game at quarterback. Two plays later, RB Louis Rankin took a hand off and bolted through a hole and sprinted for a 45-yard touchdown run. Janikowski's extra point was good and the game was tied at 7-7 with 7:08 left in the first quarter.

After WR Courtney Taylor's kickoff return, the Seahawks offense took the field at their own 26. Thanks to a pair of penalties and an errant throw, the Seahawks were forced to punt. Ryan's 43-yard kick bounced out of bounds at the Raiders 35.

The Raiders went three-and-out and Schmitt came on to punt. After a 6-yard return, the Seahawks offense took over at their own 29. A few plays later, CB Justin Miller broke up a pass play on 3rd and 8 and Seattle was forced to punt. Ryan's 29-yard punt went out of bounds at the Oakland 27.

The Raiders drove to midfield before the Seahawks forced a punt. Schmitt's 18-yard punt went out of bounds at the Seattle 31. Seattle crossed midfield but couldn't sustain the drive and Ryan came on to punt. Nick Miller called for and made a fair catch of a 41-yard punt at the Raiders 4-yard line.

Bruce Gradkowski entered the game at quarterback. Thanks to a roughing the passer call and impressive plays in the passing game by WR Jonathan Holland RB Gary Russell, the Raiders moved out to midfield. The drive stalled at the Seattle 47 and Schmitt came on to punt. After a 31-yard punt and a fair catch, Seattle took over at their own 16.

The Raiders forced a three-and-out and Ryan came on to punt. Nick Miller fielded the 59-yard punt at the 18 and returned it to the 41. On 3rd and 6 at the Oakland 45, Gradkowski was hit and fumbled. Seattle recovered and took over at the Raiders 38.

The ensuing kickoff bounced through the end zone for a touchback. A few plays later,  Gradkowski was hit as he was throwing and the referee called it a fumble. Seattle recovered and returned it to the Raiders 14. The play stood as called and Seattle took possession. Olindo Mare increased the Seahawks lead to 17-7 with a successful 24-yard field goal attempt. After the ensuing kickoff was fielded in the end zone for a touchback, a Gary Russell run ended the half.

Nick Miller returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Raiders 30. The Raiders drove to the Seattle 38 but couldn't convert on 3rd and 3. Schmitt's punt was downed at the 5.

RB Devin Moore capped a 13-play, 92-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. K Brandon Coutu's extra point was good and Seattle led 24-7 with 6:41 left in the third quarter.

Nick Miller's return of the ensuing kickoff was wiped out by penalty and the Raiders took over at their own 16 with Charlie Frye at quarterback. The Raiders went three-and-out and Schmitt came on to punt.

Obomanu returned the punt five yards, a penalty backed the Seahawks up to the 25 and Jeff Rowe entered the game at quarterback. Rowe capped the drive with a long TD pass to WR Logan Payne to give the Seahawks a 31-7 lead with 3:44 left in the third quarter.

The Seahawks forced a three-and-out. Schmitt's punt was fielded by Obomanu who was dropped immediately at the 21. After a penalty on the Raiders, Seattle took over at their own 31. Seattle drove to the Oakland 37 before the Raiders forced a punt. Ryan's kick was downed at the Oakland 14.

Moore returned the ensuing kickoff out to the Seattle 26. The Raiders forced a three-and-out and Ryan came on to punt. Nick Miller was dropped immediately after fielding the 50-yard punt and the Raiders took over at their own 29. A few plays later, the Raiders were unable to convert on 3rd and 5 and Schmitt came on to punt. Obomanu returned the 54-yard punt 10 yards to the Seattle 22.

The Raiders defense returned the favor with a three-and-out and Ryan came on to punt with 2:00 left in the game. After the punt, the Raiders took over at their own 36. A pass interference call put the Silver and Black on the Seahawks 30. Gary Russell capped a 4-play, 64-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run. Schmitt's PAT cut the Seahawks lead to 31-21 with 17 seconds left.

After the ensuing kickoff, Seattle took over at their own 15 with 12 seconds left. A Rowe kneel down ended the game.

The Raiders finish the 2009 pre-season with a 1-3 record and open the 2009 regular season, the organization's 50th season of professional football, on Monday Night, September 14 against the San Diego Chargers at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
