Steelers Defeat Raiders 38-35 in Old-Fashioned Thriller

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Oakland Raiders 38-35 on an 18-yard field goal with :02 left in the game.

The Steelers won the opening coin toss and elected to receive. Recently acquired WR/KR Jacoby Jones dropped deep to receive K Sebastian Janikowski's opening kickoff. Jacoby Jones fielded the bouncing kick and returned it 16 yards to the Pittsburgh 21. The Steelers drove to the Oakland 34 and went for it on 4th and 4, and were unsuccessful as CB Dave Amerson broke up a QB Ben Roethlisberger pass intended for WR Antonio Brown. The Raiders offense took the field at their own 34 with Derek Carr at quarterback. 

Three plays later, Carr hit WR Michael Crabtree with a 22-yard touchdown strike. The extra point was good and the Raiders led 7-0 with 12:10 left in the 1st quarter. The score was set up by a RB Latavius Murray 44-yard burst on the second play from scrimmage. 

Jacoby Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the Pittsburgh 18. The Steelers drobve to the 47 before the Raiders forced a punt. P Jordan Berry came on to punt and the kick was downed at the Oakland 2. 

The Raiders went three and out and P Marquette King came on to punt. Jacoby Jones fielded the punt and he was dropped at the Pittsburgh 40. The Steelers drove inside the Raiders 20 but were forced to settle for a 34-yard field goal attempt. K Chris Boswell put the Steelers on the board and the Raiders lead was trimmed to 7-3 2ith 4:40 left in the 1st quarter. 

RB Taiwan Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 25. The Raiders moved out to the 48 before Pittsburgh forced a punt. Jacob Jones returned the line-drive punt to the Pittsburgh 17. Running back DeAngelo Williams capped a 6-play, 83-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run. The two-point conversion was good and the Stelers took n 11-7 lead with 13:57 left in the 2nd quarter. 

Taiwan Jones fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone and took a knee for a touchback. The Raiders started their next drive at the 20. The Raiders drove to the Pittsburgh 43 before the Steelers forced a punt. King's punt was downed at the Steelers 2 by LB Korey Toomer. 

The Steelers went three and out and Berry came on to punt. The boot bounced out of bounds at the Pittsburgh 40. The Raiders reclaimed the lead with a 15-yard Carr TD pass to rookie WR Amari Cooper. The PAT was good and the Raiders led 14-11 with 6:05 left in the 2nd quarter. 

Jacoby Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the Pittsburgh 22. The Steelers drove to the Raiders 3 before facing 4th and 1. Williams ran it in for his second 3-yard TD run of the day. The PAT was good and the Steelers led 18-14 with 1:56 left in the 2nd quarter. 

Taiwan Jones returned the ensuing kickoff t the Oakland 22. The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt with 1:07 left in the 2nd quarter. King's punt was downed at the Steelers 41. The Raiders held the Steelers to a field goal attempt. The 38-yard field goal put Pittsburgh up 21-14 with :29 left in the 2nd quarter. 

Boswell's kickoff bounced out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. Carr took a knee and the Steelers took a 21-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Taiwan Jones returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half to the Oakland 27. Murray fumbled and former Raiders safety Mike Mitchell recovered and returned it for a touchdown.  The call was overturned because Mitchell ran out of bounds and was the first to touch the ball. It resulted in a three-and-out and King came on to punt. King's punt was deflected a rolled out of bounds at the Oakland 46.

The Raiders defense held and Berry came on to punt. WR Marcus Thigpen called for and made a fair catch at the Oakland 10. Mixing the pass and the run the Raiders drove to the Pittsburgh 1. Carr capped the 9-play, 90-yard drive with a 1-yard TD pass to rookie TE Clive Walford. The PAT was good and the game was tied at 21-21 with 7:02 left in the 3rd quarter.

Jacoby Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the Pittsburgh 12. The Raiders got the ball back when CB Dave Amerson picked off a Roethlisberger pass. The Raiders took over at the Steelers 32. The Steelers got the ball back when Murray took a hard hit and fumbled. The Steelers recovered at the 25.

The Raiders held and Boswell missed a 41-yard field goal and the Raiders took over at the 31. The Raiders drove to the Pittsburgh 43 before the Steelers forced a punt. The King punt was downed at the 9. Roethlisberger capped a 91-yard drive with a 14-yard TD pass to WR Martavis Bryant. The PAT was good and Pittsburgh took a 28-21 lead with 12:13 left in the 4th quarter.

Steelers took over at the 6 after Taiwan Jones fumbled the ensuing kickoff. The Steelers capitalized and scored again to take a 35-21 lead with 11:24 left.

The kickoff went out of bounds and the Raiders started at the 40. FB Jamize Olawale answered with a 19-yard touchdown run to cap a 60-yard drive. The PAT was good and the Raiders cut the lead to 35-28 with 9:32 left in the 4th quarter.

The ensuing kickoff went for a touchback and the Steelers started at the 20. The Steelers drive ended when LB Aldon Smith sacked Roethlisberger on 3rd and long taking them out of field goal range. Big Ben was hurt on the play. Thigpen fielded the punt was dropped at the Raiders 7.

The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt. Antonio Brown fumbled the punt return and the Raiders recovered. WR Andre Holmes stripped it and LB Ray-Ray Armstrong came up with the ball. The Silver and Black took over at the Steelers 39. The Raiders drove deep into Steelers territory but Carr was picked in the end zone by CB Ross Cockrell, who returned it to the Pittsburgh 24. The Steelers took over with 4:21 left and Landry Jones at quarterback.

The Raiders allowed one first down before forcing a punt. Thigpen called for an made a fair catch at the Oakland 31 with 2:15 to go. Carr capped the drive with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Crabtree. The PAT was good and the game was tied 35-35 with 1:15 to play.

The ensuing kickoff flew out of the end zone for a touchback and the Steelers started at the 20.   Boswell's 18-yard FG gave the Steelers a 38-35 victory. The Raiders fall to 4-4 on the season and return home to take on the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday at O.co Coliseum.
