Por primera vez en su historia, los Raiders tuvieron en Tom Telesco a un nuevo gerente general a cargo del draft con experiencia previa en él. El resultado, ocho jugadores elegidos con la mitad siendo para la ofensiva y la otra mitad para la defensiva, diciendo estar contento con el talento que logró sumar para la plantilla negro y plata.
"Siempre hay jugadores en el tablero que no logras conseguir y que te encantaría tener, pero tienes un número limitado de selecciones, entonces te vuelves un poco codicioso", dijo Telesco tras concluir el Draft 2024 de la NFL. "Pero realmente estoy feliz con este grupo (de jugadores que elegimos), lo estoy. Acabo de enviarle un mensaje de texto a un gerente general diciéndole que había un muchacho en la séptima ronda al que me hubiera encantado tener, pero simplemente no puedes conseguir a todos los que quieres. Pero sí, es un buen grupo. Es un buen punto de partida. Hay que agregar este grupo a la generación del draft del año pasado y, con suerte, comenzaremos avanzando".
Las Vegas no hizo transacciones durante los tres días del draft, quedándose con sus ocho selecciones originales con las que entraron a este evento para sumar talento colegial a sus filas, aunque intentaron hacerlo. No pudieron llegar a acuerdos con otras escuadras y terminaron consiguiendo jugadores que tenían en la mira.
"Estuvimos en muchas discusiones para subir y bajar (en el draft)", aseguró Telesco. "Pero la mayoría de las veces parecía que cuando nuestra selección estaba por llegar, nos sentíamos bien con el jugador que estaba allí, y al final tenías que ejecutar la selección e intentar encontrar al jugador con la mejor oportunidad de ayudarte a ganar. Así es como resultó este fin de semana".
Después de trabajar juntos durante la agencia libre, Tom Telesco y el entrenador en jefe Antonio Pierce tuvieron su primer draft juntos. Mientras para Telesco fue su draft número doce como gerente general, para Pierce fue su primero como entrenador en jefe.
"Fue fantástico trabajar con AP [Antonio Pierce] durante los tres días", declaró Telesco. "Es un proceso largo, de estar sentado mucho, hablando, pensando, imaginando escenarios. Cada elección que hagas podría impactar algo más, por lo que (Pierce) es alguien en quien rebotar ideas. Tiene una gran perspectiva, lo cual es genial. Incluso ver cómo Brandon Yeargan, Champ Kelly y JoJo Wooden trabajan juntos es realmente satisfactorio. Mejoraremos mucho en los próximos años una vez que hayamos trabajado mucho más entre nosotros. Simplemente todo el proceso será mejor el próximo año. Quedé bastante impresionado con todos".
Aunque muchos de los 'mock drafts' alrededor de la liga pronosticaban y especularon que los Raiders eligirían a un mariscal de campo durante el Draft 2024 de la NFL, ese no fue el caso. Seis jugadores de dicha posición fueron tomados por otros equipos previo a la primera selección de los Raiders (13) y acabaron pasando 137 picks antes de que Spencer Rattler fuese el siguiente mariscal de campo elegido hasta la quinta ronda. De hecho, Telesco aseguro que Las Vegas no pensaron en tomar a uno de los disponibles el viernes o sábado.
"¿En el tercer día? No", dijo tajantemente Telesco. "Realmente, tampoco en el segundo día. En el primer día, si. Pero no después de ello. Si sintiéramos que había un mariscal de campo mejor de lo que tenemos o que potencialmente podría ser mejor, ciertamente hubiésemos hecho algo, pero no se alinearon (las circunstancias)".
Poco después de concluido el draft, los Raiders hicieron oficial la contratación de 17 jugadores como agentes libres no drafteados.
8 de ellos a la ofensiva: Carter Bradley (QB - South Alabama), Clark Barrington (G - Baylor), Andrew Coker (T - TCU), Jeff Foreman (WR - Arkansas State), Lideatrick Griffin (WR - Mississippi State), Jake Johanning (G - Furman), Ramel Keyton (WR - Tennessee), y Will Putnam (C - Clemson).
9 a la defensiva: Tomari Fox (DT - North Carolina), TJ Franklin (DE - Baylor), Amari Gainer (DE - North Carolina), Demarcus Governor (CB - Northern Iowa), Phalen Sanford (S - Nebraska), Noah Shannon (DT - Iowa), Ja'Quan Sheppard (CB - Maryland), Ron Stone (DE - Washington State), y Rayshad Williams (CB - Texas Tech).
Los jugadores de primer año sin duda alguna buscarán dejar una buena impresión con la directiva, staff de coacheo y veteranos de los Raiders. Aunque la fecha para el inicio del minicampamento para los novatos aún no ha sido anunciada, estos nuevos elementos esperarán con ansias su oportunidad de portar los colores negro y plata, y con ello poder tener un impacto de cara al inicio del campo de entrenamiento.
