- James is a San Jose, Calif., native and spent time in a multitude of homeless shelters with his mother Janet during his youth. Jones moved in with his grandmother during high school where he lettered in basketball, track and football.
- During his senior season at San Jose State, where he majored in sociology, Jones was named the offensive MVP of the inaugural New Mexico Bowl.
- Jones founded The Love Jones 4 Kids Foundation in 2008, a non-profit organization that focuses on the needs of children in San Jose.
- He also hosts an annual football camp at his alma mater Gunderson High School for 200 local youth ages 7-14.
- In 2012, Jones led the NFL with 14 receiving touchdowns.
