Quick Hits: Pete Carroll addresses change in offensive coaching staff after Raiders' loss to the Browns

More changes have come following the Las Vegas Raiders' 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Sunday night, after the Raiders' ninth loss of the season, Head Coach Pete Carroll relieved Chip Kelly of his duties as offensive coordinator. After 11 games with Kelly as lead playcaller, the team ranks 30th in total yardage, 31st in points scored and 28th in red zone percentage.

This change comes two weeks after Tom McMahon was relieved of his duties as special teams coordinator. In Carroll's 14 seasons as the Seattle Seahawks head coach, he never fired a coordinator in the midst of an NFL season.

"I thought it was too painful where we were, and the play has not been good enough," the head coach said Monday morning. "And I'm really surprised as well that this has happened, but I think our players deserve it, and our fans deserve that we give them our best shot, and that's what competing is all about. And so, it falls in line philosophically. It's just a very difficult time to have to do this. And unfortunately, this would not have happened, but we're 2-9."

Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will be the team's new lead playcaller, a position he's been in previously for the Silver and Black. He served as the team's offensive coordinator from 2013-14 and 2018-21.

Read through for a look at the rest of what Carroll had to say about the decision and the current status of the team.

On his decision for Olson to take over playcalling duties:

"Greg's going to take over the playcalling, and he's got years of experience. He's been a coordinator for 13 years in the league, and we've been together before. He knows me inside and out, and I think it's a really fortunate opportunity that we have a guy that has that much background to step into this role."

On what he expects from Olson:

"Long-time NFL coach, longtime playcaller, 13 years and plus. Connecting him with the philosophy from where we worked together, he's deep into what I'm looking for, and he understands it. ... We need to run the ball better, and we need to have the running game available to us, I think I probably mentioned that last week, when you need it. Short yardage, red zone, goal line, fourth quarter, all of those times that have historically been when you need to call on it, and then you have to orchestrate your game so that it fits that. And that's why the play passes are so important and the actions are so important, and keeping the quarterback clean, and minimizing the distances on third down. All of those things all fit together. I've been doing it this way for a lot of years, and it's a winning formula if you play good defense and you kick the ball well. And so, we're trying to get that, and we just have not captured it. This is what this move is about."

On Chip Kelly:

"I gave Chip a lot of leeway because he's got an extraordinary background and history, and he had such a phenomenal season coming out of Ohio State last year that we wanted to give him his due and all that. But, as we continue to grow and come together, we just couldn't get there. So, I wish him the very best, and I like him, and we got along great and all that, but we had to make a tough call."

On if he anticipates any other potential coaching changes:

"No. I don't. I think this should be enough by now."

On how to improve offensive line moving forward:

"The effort moving forward is to minimize the exposure, and that calls on the rest of your game. If you take a look at how we've protected on our play passes, it's a big difference between how we're protecting in the drop back game. Hopefully we can clean that up and make that mix better and be more efficient."

On the current state of the locker room:

"Fortunately, we have a couple guys or a number of guys on our team that are the leaders that are obvious. If you could have heard Maxx [Crosby] in the locker room yesterday, you would think that these guys are tight and connected and on the same page. I'm proud to be able to say that he's a captain on this club, and he and Geno [Smith] have to speak for us when they get their chances. But they're not the only ones. And so, we're going to fight for every bit that we can for this week and get a great week together in practice and bring it to the to the field in L.A. and play a really good football game and try to get the win we've been looking for."
