K Sebastian Janikowski's 43-yard field goal as time expired gave the Raiders a 34-31 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in yet another Raiders/Steelers Classic. RB Darren McFadden got the Raiders on the board with a 64-yard touchdown run en route to his 10th career 100-yard rushing day, and TE Richard Gordon hauled in his first career TD reception.
Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen lit the torch in honor of Al Davis, the Raiders celebrated Hispanic Heritage, honored Bay Area Olympians and the Junior Raiderettes performed.
The Steelers won the toss and deferred their choice to the second half. The Raiders chose to receive the opening kickoff. FB Marcel Reece, the up man, fielded K Shaun Suisham's opening kickoff and returned it to the Oakland 41. WR Denarius Moors fell down and QB Carson Palmer's pass was intercepted by S Ryan Clark, who returned it to the Raiders 36.
QB Ben Roethlisberger capitalized finding TE Heath Miller for a 4-yard TD pass to cap a 7-play, 36-yard drive. The PAT was good and the Steelers took a 7-0 lead with 11:33 left in the first quarter.
Goodson fielded the ensuing kickoff and took a knee for a touchback. The Raiders fired right back with a RB Darren McFadden 64-yard TD run to cap a 3-play, 80-yard drive. K Sebastian Janikowski's PAT was good and the game was tied 7-7 with 10:33 left in the first quarter.
DB Phillip Adams dropped RB Chris Rainey at the Pittsburgh 19 on the ensuing kickoff return. Miller capped this 81-yard drive with his second 4-yard TD reception of the day. The PAT was good and the Steelers took a 14-7 lead with 3:49 left in the first quarter.
The ensuing kickoff flew out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Raiders went three and out and P Shane Lechler came out to punt. WR Antonio Brown returned the 60-yard punt 22 yards to the Raiders 48. The Raiders forced a three-and-out and P Drew Butler came on. Adams called for and made a fair catch at the Raiders 14.
The Steelers held the Raiders to a three-and-out. Brown's return for a touchdown was called back due to multiple fouls on the play. The Steelers took the field at the Pittsburgh 18.
The Raiders forced a punt and took over at the Oakland 40 after Butler shanked the punt. The Steelers forced a three-and-out and Lechler came on to punt. Brown called for and made a fair catch at the 14. A penalty during the punt back the Steelers up to their 8.
Several players later, RB Jonathan Dwyer coughed it up thanks to DT Desmond Bryant and CB Joselio Hanson recovered for the Raiders at the Steelers 30. Â The Raiders took advantage when Palmer hit WR Darrius Heyward-Bey for a 3-yard score. The extra point was good and the game was tied at 14 with 1:54 left in the second quarter.
Janikowski's ensuing kickoff went through the end zone for a touchback. The Steelers mounted a drive which ended with a successful 33-yard FG attempt and took a 17-14 lead into the locker room at halftme.
Janikowski's opening kickoff of the second half sailed through the end zone for a touchback. Several plays later, WR Mike Wallace got loose for a 22-yard pitch and catch for a touchdown to increase Pittsburgh's lead to 24-14 with 11:40 left in the 3rd quarter.
Goodson returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to the Pittsburgh 48. Palmer capped the 10-play, 48-yard drive with a 1-yard TD pass to TE Richard Gordon. The PAT was good and the Steelers lead was cut to 24-21 with 6:35 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Raiders attempted an onsides kick which bounced out of bounds. Pittsburgh took the field at the Raiders 48. Several plays later, Brown hauled in a pass ran 11 yards to goal line and was stripped. He recovered his own fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was good and Pittsburgh led 31-21.
The ensuing kickoff was fielded and downed for a touchback. The Raiders marched into Steelers territory. Heyward-Bey had to leave the game via cart after a hit at the goal line. Palmer capped the 80-yard drive with a 6-yard TD pass to WR Denarius Moore. Â The PAT was good and the Steelers lead was cut to 31-28 with 12:13 left in the 4th quarter.
Rainey returned the ensuing kickoff to the Pittsburgh 22. Three players later, Brown fumbled the ball back to the Raiders thanks to CB Pat Lee and LB Phillip Wheeler recovered it at the Oakland 36.
The Raiders drove to the Steelers 14, 50 yards in 10 plays, and Janikowski's 32-yard field goal was good. The game was at 31-31 with 6:30 left in the 4th quarter.
The ensuing kickoff flew out of the end zone for a touchback and the Steelers started at the 20. After allowing the Steelers one first down, the Silver and Black forced a punt. Adams returned the 44-yard punt to the Oakland 25.
The Raiders drove to the Pittsburgh 26. Janikowski drilled a 43-yard field goal as time expired and the Raiders defeated the Steelers 34-31.
The Raiders improve to 1-2 on the season and travel to Denver next week to face the Broncos at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
