Los Raiders tuvieron una oportunidad de rescatar el partido en los últimos minutos, pero a final de cuentas no pudieron completar la remontada y terminaron cayendo 30-27 ante los Jefes de Kansas City en el Estadio Allegiant, sufriendo así su primera derrota de la temporada 2026.
Las Vegas llegó a estar abajo por 11 puntos con menos de dos minutos por jugar, pero una anotación de Brock Bowers y una parada defensiva le dio al equipo una última oportunidad de intentar empatar el encuentro. Sin embargo, la remontada no se concretó.
Y aunque la derrota duele, especialmente después de que los Malosos tuvieron la ventaja durante buena parte del juego, este fue también un encuentro que dejó muchísimo que analizar para un equipo que ahora tendrá que demostrar cómo responde después de su primer tropiezo.
"Sabemos de lo que somos capaces y siento que cada vez estamos descubriendo más lo buenos que podemos ser", dijo Maxx Crosby después del partido. "Pero es una derrota difícil. Tenemos que recuperarnos, encontrar la manera de mejorar y seguir adelante".
Kirk Cousins tuvo su actuación más productiva como Raider en cuanto a yardaje se refiere, completando 31 de sus 52 pases para 365 yardas y dos anotaciones. El segundo de esos touchdowns llegó tras la pausa de los dos minutos en el último cuarto, cuando Cousins encontró a Brock Bowers para una anotación espectacular que mantuvo con vida a Las Vegas.
Bowers terminó con seis recepciones para 86 yardas y ese touchdown, junto a la conversión de dos puntos, redujo la desventaja a tres puntos.
Los Raiders todavía necesitaban detener a Kansas City y recuperar el balón para tener una oportunidad. Y lo consiguieron. Pero en la última jugada, Cousins fue presionado y lanzó una intercepción que puso punto final al encuentro.
"Este equipo tiene muchísima resiliencia", aseguró el ala cerrada Michael Mayer. "Sentí que luchamos con todo lo que teníamos. Simplemente nos quedamos un poco cortos".
La defensa de los Raiders había sido una de las grandes protagonistas durante las primeras tres semanas de la temporada. Contra Kansas City, volvió a mostrar momentos positivos, pero las jugadas explosivas terminaron siendo demasiado costosas.
Antes de este partido, Las Vegas solamente había permitido dos jugadas de más de 30 yardas. Contra los Jefes, permitió tres jugadas de más de 40 yardas. Y después de cada una de ellas, Kansas City terminó anotando los tres touchdowns que consiguieron en el juego.
La primera llegó cuando los Raiders iban al frente 7-0. En tercera y diez, Patrick Mahomes encontró a Xavier Worthy para un avance de 41 yardas. Tres jugadas después, los Jefes llegaron a la zona de anotación.
Más adelante, con Las Vegas ganando 13-10, Kenneth Walker III encontró un hueco y se escapó con un acarreo de 76 yardas que puso a Kansas City en la zona roja y de ahí encontraron las diagonales poco después para poner al frente a los visitantes.
Y cuando los Raiders habían retomado la ventaja, 19-17, con menos de cuatro minutos por jugar, Mahomes volvió a encontrar una jugada explosiva, esta vez con una conexión aérea con Tyquan Thornton para un avance de 55 yardas. Una jugada después, Kansas City volvió a encontrar la zona prometida.
Walker terminó con 177 yardas terrestres y dos anotaciones, convirtiéndose en uno de los principales factores de la victoria de Kansas City.
"Hoy no fue nuestro mejor partido. Lo sé. No provocamos suficientes pérdidas de balón, no conseguimos suficientes paradas importantes y permitimos demasiadas jugadas explosivas en momentos críticos", declaró Crosby. "Hicimos muchas cosas buenas también, pero sabemos que podemos ser mejores".
Las Vegas también tuvo oportunidades para cambiar la historia del partido. En la primera serie de la segunda mitad, los Raiders ampliaron su ventaja a 6 puntos con un gol de campo de 41 yardas de Matt Gay en cuarta oportunidad con 7 por avanzar. Sin embargo, un castigo de Kansas City hizo que Klint Kubiak se sintiera cómodo jugándosela en cuarta y dos. Las Vegas se arriesgó, pero no movieron las cadenas. En lugar de sumar puntos, los Malosos se fueron con las manos vacías.
Contra un equipo como Kansas City, esos detalles pueden terminar siendo enormes. Y lo mismo ocurrió en el cierre con su primera pérdida de balón del juego.
Después de que los Jefes retomaran la ventaja 23-19 en el último cuarto, un balón suelto de Dareke Young en la patada de salida le permitió a Kansas City recuperar la posesión, y Kenneth Walker III aprovechó para anotar su segundo touchdown del partido y de esta forma hacer imposible una remontada de 11 puntos por segunda semana consecutiva.
"Esto nos va a servir a todos", es lo que dijo el linebacker Dean Nakobe Dean sobre lo que pueden sacar de este partido. "Vivir algo así, llegar a un juego tan cerrado, nos va a ayudar durante la temporada y a lo largo de nuestras carreras. Vamos a ver el video (del partido), vamos a construir sobre esto y vamos a mejorar".
Los Raiders llegaron a este encuentro con marca de 3-0 y tuvieron la oportunidad de quedarse solos en la cima de la AFC Oeste. Pelearon al tú por tú contra un equipo que ha sido contendiente en la conferencia americana en la última década.
La derrota dejó claro que todavía hay detalles por corregir, particularmente cuando se trata de evitar jugadas explosivas y ejecutar en momentos críticos. Pero también dejó una realidad distinta a la que muchos esperaban antes de comenzar la temporada: estos Raiders pueden jugar partidos cerrados contra equipos considerados por muchos como favoritos sobre ellos.
Ahora tendrán que demostrar qué pueden hacer con lo aprendido.
"Es el mismo enfoque, sin importar si ganamos o perdemos", dijo Crosby. "¿Cómo podemos mejorar? ¿Cómo podemos recuperarnos y conseguir más victorias?"
La primera derrota de la era Klint Kubiak ya llegó, ahora los Raiders tendrán que demostrar cómo responden a ella. El siguiente reto será en patio ajeno ante los Patriotas de Nueva Inglaterra.
