Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins of the NFC East will be traveling to O.co Coliseum on September 29 to take on the Oakland Raiders for the first time since 2009. The Raiders and the Redskins have history dating back to October 19, 1970 when the Raiders defeated them at the Coliseum 34-20 on Monday Night Football. This game is also a rematch of Super Bowl XVIII, in which the Raiders defeated the Redskins 38-9 in Tampa, Fla., to become capture their third World Championship of Professional Football.

Going into the 12th edition of the Oakland-Washington series, the Silver and Black lead the all-time series 7-4 and are 3-2 against them at  home.

1970s and 80s

Before moving to Los Angeles, the Raiders dominated the series, winning the first three games in 1970, 1975 and 1980. The Silver and Black suffered their first lost to the Redskins on October 2, 1983, by a score of 37-35, but they redeemed the loss later in the season with a 38-9 victory in Super Bowl XVIII. The Raiders would finish the 80s with an overall regular season record of 4-2 against the Redskins.

1990s and 2000s

Despite only playing three games against the Redskins during the 90s, the Raiders went 2-1 with two wins at Washington's RFK Memorial Stadium in 1992 as the Los Angeles Raiders and in 1995 as the Oakland Raiders. The Redskins won 29-19 during their only trip to Oakland in the 90s in 1998.

The Raiders and Redskins played again on November 20, 2005 after a nearly seven-year hiatus— a game the Raiders won 16-13. This marked the first time the Raiders played in Washington since 1995 and the first time the team played in the Redskins' new stadium, Fedex Field, which opened in 1997. Washington defeated the Raiders in their last match-up in Oakland in 2009.
