Valiant Defensive Effort Falls Short in San Diego

The Chargers won the toss and elected to defer. RB Latavius Murray returned the opening kickoff 19 yards to the Oakland 22. The Chargers recovered a botched snap on the first play of the game and took over at the Oakland 22. Two plays later QB Philip Rivers hit WR Malcom Floyd for a 22-yard scoring strike. The PAT was good and the home team led 7-0 with 14:07 left in the 1st quarter.

Murray returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 19. The Raiders went three-and-out and P Marquette King came on to punt on 4th and 1. WR Keenan Allen returned King's 62-yard rocket to the San Diego 27.

The Raiders defense returned the favor with a three-and-out of their own and P Mike Scifres came on to punt. WR Denarius Moore called for and made a fair catch at the Oakland 30.

The Raiders drove to the Chargers 23 before San Diego forced a field goal attempt. K Sebastian Janikowski's 42-yard field goal got the Raiders on the board and cut the Chargers lead to 7-3 with 7:27 left in the first quarter.

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff was downed in the end zone for a touchback. The Chargers moved out to the Raiders 45 before the visitors forced a punt. Scifres' boot was downed at the Raiders 6.

The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt. Allen fumbled the bouncing 51-yard punt but recovered it at the San Diego 41. The Chargers drove to the Oakland 41 before the defense came up with the stop. The punt was downed inside the 10 and a holding penalty backed the Raiders up to the 4.

King came on to punt after another three and out. Allen called for and made a fair catch at the San Diego 46. After allowing one first down, the Raiders forced a punt. Moore returned Scifres' punt 4 yards to the Oakland 13.

The Raiders went three and out again and King came on to punt. King's punt bounced out of bounds at the Chargers 43. The Chargers drove to the Raiders 5 before the defense forced a field goal attempt. K Nick Novak's 23-yard field goal gave the Chargers a 10-3 lead with 4:12 left in the 2nd quarter.

Murray returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 20. The Raiders moved out near midfield before the Chargers forced a punt. Allen returned King's punt to the San Diego 23. The Chargers got in position for a Novak field goal attempt. The 48-yard kick sailed wide left and the half ended with the Chargers up 10-3.

The Raiders forced a three and out thanks to DT Antonio Smith's 3rd down sack and started at the 29 after Moore was dropped for a 5-yard loss on the punt return. The Raiders went three and out and King's punt was downed at the San Diego 33.

The Chargers added a 52-yard field goal to increase their lead to 13-3 with 7:17 left in the 3rd quarter. Murray's kickoff return was wiped out by a penalty and the Raiders started at the 8. After a three and out, Allen returned King's 62-yard punt to the San Diego 46. The Raiders held the Chargers to a three and out. Scifres' punt bounced out of bounds at the 2.

The Raiders flipped the field although the drive stalled. CB Chimdi Chekwa downed a King punt at the San Diego 1. The Raiders forced a punt and got the ball back but had to punt it right back. Allen called for and made a fair catch at the 14.

The Raiders ended the Chargers next drive thanks to rookie LB Khalil Mack's first career sack. Moore returned Scifres' punt to the Oakland 45. The Raiders drove to the Chargers 8. Janikowski's 25-yard field goal made it a one score game, Chargers 13-6 with 4:06 left.

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff flew out of the back of the end zone for a touchback. The Chargers drove to the Raiders 39 and Scifres came on to punt with 1:13 left.

Scifres punt went out of bounds at the 12 with 1:05 to play. Carr's desperation pass on the last play of the game fell incomplete and the Chargers emerged with the win.

The Raiders fall to 0-10 on the season and head home to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on NFL's Network's Thursday Night Football.
