100 Days of 100 Jersey Numbers - 77

For a total of 100 days, we'll take a look at the men who have played for the Raiders jersey number by jersey number. This series will highlight some of the greatest players in NFL history. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Some players are superstitious about their jersey number. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Twenty-one players have worn jersey No. 77 in Raiders history, including a couple of dominant defensive linemen and a Hall of Fame offensive tackle.

Joe Barbee – T – 1960

After playing college football at Kent State, Barbee played in one game for the Raiders during the franchise's inaugural season.

George Shirkey – DT – 1962

Shirkey joined the Raiders after two years with the Houston Oilers. He played in 14 games for the Raiders in 1962.

Proverb Jacobs – T – 1963-64

Jacobs joined the Raiders after a year with the Eagles, a year with the Giants, and two with the New York Titans (Jets). He played in 20 games for the Raiders.

Ike Lassiter – DE – 1965-69

Lassiter joined the Raiders after three years with the Denver Broncos. He played in 70 games with 42 starts and recorded one interception, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles. He went on to play two seasons with the Patriots.

Ron Mix – T – 1971

Mix joined the Raiders after 10 years with the San Diego Chargers. He played in 12 games with four starts. Mix was the first former Raider inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1979).

Bubba Smith – DE – 1973-74

Smith joined the Raiders after five years with the Baltimore Colts. He played in 26 games with 25 starts and recovered one fumble. After two years with the Houston Oilers, Smith went on to a successful acting career, during which he made 50 appearances in movies and TV shows, including the Police Academy films.

Charles Philyaw – DE – 1976-79

The Raiders selected Philyaw in the 2nd round of the 1976 NFL Draft out of Texas Southern. He played in 44 games with nine starts and was a member of the Raiders Super Bowl XI championship team.

Joe Campbell – DE – 1980-81

Campbell played for the Saints from 1977 into the 1980 season before the Raiders acquired him. He played in 13 games for the Silver and Black and was a member of the Raiders Super Bowl XV championship team. He was acquired by Tampa Bay during the 1981 season.

Lyle Alzado – DE – 1982-85

Alzado joined the Raiders after eight years with the Broncos and three with the Browns. He played in 51 games with 51 starts and recorded 23 sacks, two safeties and four fumble recoveries, including one returned for a TD. He was a key member of the Raiders Super Bowl XVIII championship team.

Chris Riehm – G – 1986-88

An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Riehm played in 21 games with six starts.

Ted Chapman – DE – 1987

Chapman played in two games with one start in 1987 and recovered one fumble.

Reggie McElroy – G/T – 1991-92

McElroy joined the Raiders after seven years with the New York Jets. He played in 32 games with seven starts. McElroy went on to play for the Chiefs, Vikings and Broncos.

Rich Stephens – G/T – 1993, 1995

Originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1989, Stephens played in 29 games with two starts for the Raiders.

Pat Harlow – T – 1997-98

Harlow joined the Raiders after four years with New England. He wore No. 75 in 1996, and No. 77 from 1997-98. In all, he played in 31 games with 30 starts.

Darryl Ashmore – G/T – 2001

Ashmore joined the Raiders after playing for the St. Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins. He wore No. 73 from 1998-00 and switched to No. 77 in 2001. In all, he played in 61 games with seven starts.

Joe Wong – G/T – 2003

An undrafted free agent out of Hawaii, Wong played in two games for the Raiders in 2003.

Anttaj Hawthorne – DT – 2005-06

The Raiders selected Hawthorne in the 6th round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin. He appeared in 18 games and also represented the Raiders in NFL Europe.

Kwame Harris – T – 2008

Harris joined the Raiders after five years with the San Francisco 49ers. He played in 14 games with 11 starts.

Matt Shaughnessy – DE – 2009-12

The Raiders selected Shaughnessy in the 3rd round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin. He played in 51 games with 29 starts and recorded 15.5 sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered one fumble. Shaughnessy is currently a member of the Arizona Cardinals.

Ricky Lumpkin – DT – 2013

Lumpkin joined the Raiders in 2013 after playing in one game for the Cardinals in 2012. He joined the practice squad in November and was signed to the active roster in December. Lumpkin saw action in one game in 2013. In 2014, Lumpkin changed his jersey number to 93.

Austin Howard - G/T - 2014-present

After three seasons in New York playing for the Jets, Howard joined the Raiders in 2014. He started all 16 games his first season in Silver and Black.
