Early Look: Raiders Host Vikings in Super Bowl Rematch

Photos from the Raiders vs Vikings all-time series.

The Oakland Raiders will host the Minnesota Vikings in a Super Bowl XI rematch Sunday, November 15 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland. The Raiders will also face the Vikings at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota in the preseason for the second straight year.

My earliest memories of professional football and understanding that there was a championship start with Super Bowl XI. I may have only been six years old at the time, but Hall of Fame cornerback Willie Brown's iconic 75-yard interception return for a touchdown is something I'll never forget.

The Vikings, under head coach Bud Grant, were perennial playoff contenders in the 1970s. With names like Fran Tarkenton, Sammy White, Ahmad Rashad, Alan Paige, and Chuck Foreman, the Vikings were among the NFL's elite teams.

Last year, both the Raiders and the Vikings drafted quarterbacks with whom the other will forever be compared.. The Vikings took Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater late in the first round and the Raiders took Derek Carr early in the second. Both enjoyed some measure of success during their rookie seasons and they are looked to as their team's franchise quarterback.

The Raiders and the Vikings of the 1970s had their franchise quarterbacks - Tarkenton for the Vikings and Kenny Stabler for the Raiders. We'll see if Carr and Bridgewater become icons of their era.

As we commemorate the 50th Super Bowl, we fondly look back at Super Bowl XI, as the Raiders captured their first World Championship of Professional Football with a 32-14 win over the Vikings.

Here are some note about the series:

Oakland will face off against the NFC North this season, marking the first time since 2011 that they have played them. Last season, the NFC North had two playoff teams and one participant (Green Bay) in the NFC Championship Game. The Raiders hold a 27-21 combined all-time record against Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota. The Silver and Black went 2-2 against the NFC North in 2011 with wins at Minnesota and at home against Chicago.

Former Raiders head coach Norv Turner is now the offensive coordinator for the Vikings.

Former Raiders CB DeMarcus Van Dyke is now with the Vikings.

The Raiders lead the all-time series, 9-4.

Oakland won the teams' only postseason meeting, a 32-14 victory in Super Bowl XI on Jan. 9, 1977.

This season's contest will mark the Raiders' seventh home game against Minnesota, where they lead 5-1. The Vikings only win at Oakland came on Nov. 17, 1996 (16-13, Vikings).

Oakland has won three of its last four meetings against the Vikings, including the last contest, a 27-21 win at Minnesota on Nov. 20, 2011.

Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio (pictured) finished his playing career with Minnesota as a linebacker from 1992-95. Raiders defensive assistant Sam Anno also played linebacker for the Vikings from 1987-88.

Raiders offensive line coach Mike Tice spend 13 years with Minnesota, three as a tight end (1992-93, 1995), one as tight ends coach (1996), five as offensive line coach/assistant head coach (1997-2001), and four as head coach (2002-05).

Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave held the same position with Minnesota from 2011-13, where he worked with Raiders QB Christian Ponder, a Viking from 2011-14 (38 games with 36 starts).

Raiders quarterbacks coach Todd Downing began his professional coaching career with the Vikings, working as a coaching intern/assistant (2001-02), football systems analyst (2003-04) and quality control – offense (2005).
