Klint Kubiak managing quick turnaround from Super Bowl to NFL Combine

INDIANAPOLIS — Klint Kubiak hasn't had time to soak it all in yet.

A mere 17 days removed from confetti falling over him and his family after winning Super Bowl LX with the Seattle Seahawks, he's now at the NFL Combine ready to look for the next pieces of his new roster.

"It all happened really fast, but that's the NFL now," Kubiak said. "You play that late into the season and then the calendar starts right up again with the Combine. It's a good problem to have."

Day by day, Kubiak is easing into his new role. While a first-time head coach, there are several factors helping him beat the learning curve.

Coming from great NFL pedigree as his father, Gary, was a former quarterback, offensive coordinator and Super Bowl winning head coach for the Denver Broncos, has already played a factor in how Kubiak has constructed his coaching staff over the last two weeks. The Raiders have added veteran coaches such as Mike McCoy, Joe DeCamillis and Rick Dennison with decades worth of NFL experience.

As free agency and the NFL Draft near, he's making a point to first evaluate the roster he inherited – not only to determine team needs, but see how his staff can start maximizing who's already in the locker room.

"We're working though that right now with the coaches all the while being at the Combine," he said. "You kind of do it all at once, but the great thing is Spy [John Spytek] has allowed us to hire some really good veteran coaches who's done this before. It's not their first rodeo. ... There's some guys that have been in the fire together and that really helps things when you're on a short timetable like we are now."

Considering the short timetable, he's also leaned heavily on the scouting department already set in place by John Spytek. He mentioned Assistant General Manager Brian Stark as someone he's been working closely with to get up to speed. Kubiak and Stark worked for the Denver Broncos at the same time for four seasons.

This will be an important Combine for Kubiak at the helm, considering the Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick. While in Indianapolis, he'll get his first glance in person of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who is projected to go first overall.

"Excited to keep learning about him and it's not just me, it's our entire coaching staff," Kubiak said of Mendoza. "I want all of our coaches to get involved, especially at that position. I want everybody's input, but obviously he's been successful. He had a lot of success last year.

"He won a national championship and that's what you want. You want a winner."

And while Mendoza is maybe the most high profile prospect the Raiders might be meeting with this week, Kubiak and Co. will be equally diligent with all of interviews in identifying high character players to bring to Las Vegas.

"I always look at, 'Is this a person I can coach? Is this a coachable person?'" Kubiak said. "When you're talking to them in the interview and you're bringing up their tape, did they have all the answers for you or are they coachable?

"You have an 18-minute window to kind of get into that and see what that person is like. ... Once they're yours, they're yours for a long time and you've got to make sure you can help them get better."
