Primetime Pete
Pete Carroll hasn't been outshined too many times under the bright lights.
His career record as a head coach in primetime games stands at 41-22-1. During his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll went 14-4 in Monday Night Football games.
"Monday Night Football has been something big to all of us for all the time we've been around, and we talked to the team about that today," Carroll said Thursday. "Some of our guys, when they were little kids, were dreaming about playing on Monday night. So, it is a big deal. We have to handle it really well. If you've looked at our days in Seattle, we've done pretty well on Monday night. And you expect to continue to find that consistency that you need in that situation and not let everything get your head and take you out of your game."
This will also be his fourth head-to-head matchup against Jim Harbaugh in a NFL primetime game, with Carroll holding a slight 2-1 edge.
Crosby vs. Herbert
Like their respective coaches, Maxx Crosby and Justin Herbert have had their fair share of battles.
Since being drafted in 2020, Justin Herbert has six wins against the Raiders – his career-most against any singular team. In those games, he's thrown for 2,516 yards with an 18:2 touchdown to interception ratio.
"They're making good decisions in the RPO game. Then from there, just the quick decisions in the drop back passing game, and he's getting the ball out pretty quick," defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said of Herbert's role in the Chargers offense. "And if he doesn't have it, he has the ability to move around, whether he goes down the field with it or takes off."
Herbert has been sacked 17 times in his nine games against the Raiders, six of those by Crosby. It's one of the teams the edge rusher has had great success against, with nine tackles for loss in games against Herbert as well. The Chargers are also one of three teams Crosby has had multiple games against where he has recorded two sacks or more.
"One of the best in the business. A game-wrecker, as we like to call him," Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said.
Crosby lined up in multiple spots on the line in Week 1, including three snaps with a quarterback pressure at defensive tackle. It will be interesting to see if that continues heading into a 10th matchup with Herbert.
Injury report
Things are progressing for linebacker Elandon Roberts, who was a limited participant in Friday's practice.
However Brock Bowers didn't partake in a second straight day of practice due to a knee injury. His situation is certainly one to monitor heading into the final practice before Monday's game.
Something else to take into consideration is Jackson Powers-Johnson missing Friday's practice with a concussion. If he doesn't clear in time for the game, veteran Alex Cappa would be next man up at guard.
Down to the ground
The Raiders defense collectively tackled well in the season opener, something that will be important to continue on Monday night.
The Silver and Black converted 66 of 70 tackle attempts in Week 1, recording a league-low 5.7 missed tackle percentage, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Those four missed tackles only converted into four extra yards as well. This is massive improvement in comparison to their first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, with Pro Football Focus totaling 13 missed tackles in that game.
"If you take the first preseason game ... with the first regular season game, it was night and day," Graham said. "So to me as a coach, to see that improvement, it's a credit to the players, all the hard work, because for us, we pointed it out from the first game and said, 'OK, here's how we're going to go about correcting it and how we're going to work it.' And the guys really bought into it, and it showed up the first week. We'll see how it goes this week, but we got to keep working it."
Revenge game Geno
Coming off 362 yards in Massachusetts, Geno Smith could do even more damage against his former team.
Before signing with the Seattle Seahawks, Smith made a pitstop with the Chargers, appearing in five games as a backup in 2018. Statistically speaking, Smith seems to take his matchups against his former teams personally, with 5-1 record against them.
He holds the best completion percentage (67.4) in games against his former teams in Super Bowl Era (min. 5 starts). Additionally, he has the best touchdown to interception ratio (9:1) and fourth-best passer rating (100.3) in those circumstances.
In his one game against the Chargers as a Seattle Seahawk, he completed 74.1 percent of his passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.
"I've got the utmost confidence in Geno right now," Chip Kelly said. "We can call whatever we want, and I think he's going to find a way to execute, and he's going to make the right decision. Sometimes the right decision is to throw the ball away, but he'll make that right decision. Very rarely do I see Geno trying to force anything, and he didn't try to force anything last Sunday."
Looking back and looking ahead
For the first time since 2018, the Chargers swept the Raiders in their two annual matchups last season. The Chargers also won both of those games by double-digits, with a 26 point differential.
On the flip side, the Raiders have the opportunity to start their season 2-0 for the first time since 2021. In three of the five occasions the Raiders started their season with two wins, it's resulted in a winning season and a playoff berth.
