Versus: Big opportunities for Raiders rookies facing the defending Super Bowl champions

The Las Vegas Raiders (2-11) and Philadelphia Eagles (8-5), despite their contrasting records, have a few things in common.

Both teams have been putting together less than desirable showings on the field as of late while trying to end losing streaks. The Silver and Black go to Lincoln Financial Field having lost their last seven games, including a 24-17 defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week 14, while the Eagles have lost three straight games, also suffering a one-score loss to an AFC West team in their last contest, the Los Angeles Chargers, in overtime.

Offensive woes have contributed to losing ways as the Eagles turned the ball over five times against the Chargers. As for the Raiders, they haven't scored more than 20 points in a game since Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As each team tries to turn the tide, here's a trio of matchups to follow heading into Philly.

Darien Porter vs. A.J. Brown

Darien Porter will be the presumptive starting cornerback option to replace Kyu Blu Kelly, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Denver Broncos.

While Porter has made six starts, there have been just three games in which he's played more than 50 percent of defensive snaps. In relief of Kelly on Sunday, Porter had one of his best showings to date going stride for stride with Pro Bowler Courtland Sutton. The rookie finished with six tackles and two pass deflections.

"I still wanted another play or two out there that I feel like I left out there," Porter said of his performance. "But I did what I could to put our team in a great position to win, so you got to be happy with that."

Considering the Raiders trusted Porter to shadow Denver's WR1, the rookie could see a few reps lined up across from A.J. Brown. It doesn't get much harder for a young cornerback than covering Brown, who's consistently been one of the best receivers in the league since he was drafted in 2019. Brown has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in a season five times in his career, and is on course for a sixth in 2025. The three-time Pro Bowler is also coming off his third straight game over 100 receiving yards.

"Honestly he's a little similar to Courtland Sutton in the fact that he's not quite as tall but he's a bigger, stronger receiver so you got to be able to handle that," Porter said. "I know no one can really run by me so that's not really the concern for me but just making sure technique-wise, getting some disruption off the line when you can. And disrupting the timing, being able to break up anything that comes your way.

"They're going to target me, I know it. They're going to try and feed their guy so I've just to be ready to line back up and do it again."

QB vs. QB

The level of play at quarterback could make or break this contest for either team.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts hasn't necessarily looked like himself lately. In his last five games, he's completed just 57 percent of his throws with a 3:5 touchdown to interception ratio. His 31.2 passer rating against the Chargers last Monday is the fourth lowest rating in his career.

Things have been rough for Geno Smith as well, being sacked 28 times in his last five games. While he's completed nearly 68 percent of his passes this season, he's still tied for the league lead in interceptions.

There's a chance Smith doesn't suit up this Sunday against the Eagles as he works through a shoulder injury suffered in the last game. Pete Carroll said before practice that Smith should be considered "day-to-day" as the team continues to "see how it turns out at the end of the week." He also said in the event Smith is ruled out, Kenny Pickett will start.

"I love the way he prepares and practices," Carroll said of Pickett. "He looked very good in the game the other night. We saw he did some really nice things, big plays, and escaped a little bit, got a little bit of running in. All of that looked really good."

Pickett, a former first-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers, played for the Philadelphia Eagles last season – even seeing seven snaps of action in Super Bowl LIX. He was traded twice this offseason, first to the Cleveland Browns and later to the Raiders to help fill a void after Aidan O'Connell was placed on injured reserve in the preseason.

After coming in for Smith in the fourth quarter against the Broncos, Pickett went 8-of-11 for 97 yards and a touchdown pass to Shedrick Jackson.

"I'm confident that I get the ball around the field where I need to and all the concepts that we have, everything that we run," Pickett said. "Definitely confident in what I can do. Right now, it's just about trying to steal as many reps as I can with these guys and get the timing down."

Ashton Jeanty vs. Saquon Barkley

This has been one of the more anticipated matchups around the league since Ashton Jeanty was drafted, and now it's finally coming to fruition.

While both running backs have had some adversity this season, they've still showcased enough to claim themselves as some of the best rushers of present times and the future.

Saquon Barkley is coming off an incredible 2024 campaign in which he won NFL Offensive Player of the Year after becoming the ninth player in league history to rush for over 2,000 yards in the season. While he's still enjoying a moderately successful season, neither his rushing yards (862) nor rushing touchdown (five) totals crack the top 10 in the league.

"He's one of the best in the league, to me, obviously," Jeanty said. "I think he's still having a good year, not quite as big time as last year, but he's a great player. I've been watching him for a long time, study his game. He does a lot of great things on the field."

The Raiders' rushing attack has been inconsistent, with Jeanty averaging 13.4 attempts and 35.6 rushing yards over the last five games. However, he continues to be an integral piece of the offense as he's recorded 924 scrimmage yards and eight total touchdowns on the year. With 76 more scrimmage yards, he'd become the fifth player in franchise history to hit 1,000 scrimmage yards in their rookie season – joining the likes of Brock Bowers, Josh Jacobs, Amari Cooper and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen.

It's also worth noting that Barkley and Jeanty both lead the league in carries for zero or negative yards (56), per NFL researcher Tony Holzman-Escareno.
