Versus: With two games left, Maxx Crosby looks to maintain high gear in Week 17 vs. Giants

Both the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants were close to pulling out a Week 16 victory in one-possession games. Now going head-to-head this Sunday in Allegiant Stadium, they'll both be trying to end nine-game losing skids.

Here's a trio of matchups to follow in Week 17.

Maxx Crosby vs Jaxson Dart

Maxx Crosby's energy and effort on the field continue to be unmatched late in the season.

Despite the team's 2-13 record, he's been playing some of his best football. He's recorded at least one sack in three of his last four games, and has compiled nine tackles for loss in that four game stretch. His 39 percent run stop win rate is first among edge rushers, per ESPN Analytics. It was also announced Tuesday that he's been selected to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl.

"He's a great inspiration," Pete Carroll said of Crosby, "and I don't talk about this much because I wasn't here when Maxx was first here, but he's been through a lot and he's overcome a tremendous amount of challenge in his life, and he has formulated the kind of plan of how he lives and how he operates that is just emblematic of all that you could hope somebody could do.

"And so, when he gets his opportunities and he makes those plays, again, it's just another statement that he's here for real and he's the real deal and all that. It means a tremendous amount to the players. His words and his intentions and his expressions of by the way he plays, couldn't be more crucial to inspiring people and our teammates in particular."

The Raiders defense will be facing their third rookie quarterback of the season in Jaxson Dart. The 25th overall pick out of Ole Miss has thrown for 1,835 yards with a 13:5 touchdown to interception ratio. He's also been an asset on the ground with seven rushing touchdowns – tied for the third-most by any quarterback this season.

"Dynamic football player," said defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. "What I mean by that is explosive plays in the run game. You see it when he creates those plays down there running the ball, explosive plays in terms of pass game, he has arm talent like and then the fact that the loose plays when he gets outside the pocket, can get the ball down the field. He's doing a good job of distributing the ball. ... It's a good young player that's just starting his NFL career, has a level of toughness. He'll throw it up in there with against anybody. It's definitely a challenge for us."

Yet with the success Dart has had, he's coming off a Week 16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in which he recorded career lows in pass completions (seven), completion percentage (53.8) and passing yards (33). He was also sacked five times.

'The Condor' could be the one to unlock the game for the Raiders in their quest to break their losing streak.

"My job is to be the best defensive end in the world and that's what I focus on everyday," Crosby said of his approach for Week 17, "and being a great leader, and being an influence and being that guy on a consistent basis for my team."

Caleb Rogers vs. Dexter Lawrence

Caleb Rogers hasn't looked too shabby in his four career starts at right guard.

While he admittedly isn't a big fan of Pro Football Focus ratings, the site seems to be a fan of his. He holds a 74.1 pass blocking grade, the second-highest of any offensive lineman on the team (min. four games played). The rookie didn't allow a single pressure against the Houston Texans, with quarterback Geno Smith having an average dropback time of 3.33 seconds, per Next Gen Stats.

"He's been developing throughout the year," Smith said, "and when he's gotten his opportunities, he's going out there and he's played well. I know he can improve on some things, and I know he'll be the first to say that, but I just love the way that he competes, the way that he goes out there. He gives us a chance to be a good offense, and for him, just go out there and play your game."

While Rogers has already lined up against some formidable defensive tackles, arguably his biggest test to date will be against Dexter Lawrence. The three-time Pro Bowler, with 12 quarterback pressures this season, has demanded enough attention at nose tackle for his edge rushers to eat. Edge rushing duo Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter have combined for 18.5 sacks this season.

"It starts up front with their interior," Smith said. "You talk about Dexter Lawrence, one of the better nose tackles in the game. I mean, just a big, strong, massive human being. So, we've got to have a plan for him."

Eric Stokes vs. Wan'Dale Robinson

Cornerback Eric Stokes has been one of the Raiders' top free agent signings, and throughout the season has showcased the abilities that made him a first-round pick in 2021. After coming away with 11 pass deflections his rookie season, injuries then hindered his ability to stay on the field. Now in the Silver and Black, he's only missed one game while locking down his side of the field. With his five pass deflections, he's allowed the lowest completion percentage (56.6) and yards per target (5.5) of any defensive back on the team.

"He's about his business," Graham said. "I'm sure being on a new team, he came in with a certain focus, you have to ask him, but he's strictly business. And he's risen to the occasion in terms of when they challenge him. So, it's been good to see him grow and get into this role where there's confidence."

This Sunday, he'll have his fair share of opportunities to lock down Wan'Dale Robinson, who has emerged into a pivotal piece of the Giants offense. After Mailk Nabers' season-ending knee injury in Week 4, Robinson has taken the mantle as the team's top pass catcher. He leads the team in receptions (81) and receiving yards (901).

Of Robinson's receiving totals this season, he's caught 49 passes for 536 yards while lined up in the slot – both being the third-most in the league, per Next Gen Stats. Therefore, safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. and nickel cornerback Greedy Vance could see some snaps across from Robinson as well.
