Versus: Pete Carroll prepares for an Cowboys explosive offense molded by his former coordinator

On Monday Night Football, the Las Vegas Raiders host a Dallas Cowboys team coming off their bye week.

The Silver and Black will also be going into the primetime game with some extra days of rest, as their last game was Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos. It was a frustrating loss for the Raiders, coming up one possession short for a third time this season, but the team is looking ahead to its next opportunity.

Here are three key matchups to follow for Week 11.

Pete Carroll vs. Brian Schottenheimer

The Raiders head coach will have his second "student vs. teacher" matchup, as he's pitted against another one of his former coordinators.

Brian Schottenheimer – son of Marty, the legendary head coach with 200 career wins – has made a name of his own as a successful offensive coordinator for several NFL teams. One of those teams was the Seattle Seahawks, under Carroll from 2018-2020. In each of those three seasons, the Seahawks offense ranked top 10 in the league in points scored and posted at least 10 wins.

This offseason, Schottenheimer was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach of the Dallas Cowboys – with his offense being just as explosive now as it was under Carroll. The Cowboys rank fourth in the NFL in points per game (29.2), sixth in third-down conversion percentage (43) and seventh in total yardage (3,406).

"I think his stamp on this team, right now is the offense," Carroll said. "They're really functioning at a high level. They're ranked highly in almost every one of the critical categories -- points, yards, all kinds of stuff. And I know that that's where his mark is."

With Carroll being more of a defensive minded head coach, the Raiders haven't been too shabby in that phase of the game.

They rank in the top 15 in the league in fewest passing and rushing yards allowed. Despite coming off a 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 10, the Raiders defense held its opponent to a season-low 220 yards with a 15.92 defensive EPA (expected points added).

"I've talked glowingly about Pete and I feel that way. It'll be great to see him," Schottenheimer said of the upcoming matchup. "That's the best part of this business is the people side of it and that's what I really look forward to. ... He's been so instrumental to me and my career and how I view my job and my position here at the Cowboys. I've talked to him but I haven't probably shared with him how much he means to me."

While this will be Carroll's first matchup against Brian, he previously coached against Schottenheimer's father in 1998. Carroll's Patriots defeated Marty's Chiefs, 40-10, in Week 6 at Foxboro Stadium.

"He's been a great coach, a great family background. His dad is one of the guys that I have the most respect for," Carroll said, "for the way he styled his coaching and all of that. Brian has his own way."

Raiders' interior offensive line vs. Quinnen Williams

Statistically, the Dallas Cowboys have one of the worse defenses in the NFL. That could change quickly considering their latest acquisition on the defensive line.

Dallas has had a hard time trying to replicate the production of All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons after trading him to the Green Bay Packers. Through their first nine games, the Cowboys rank 27th or lower in points allowed, passing yards allowed and passing touchdowns allowed.

This prompted the team to send multiple picks and Mazi Smith to the New York Jets for three-time Pro Bowler Quinnen Williams before the trade deadline. Williams, the Jets' first-round pick in 2019, has 40 career sacks and 59 tackles for loss. His three forced fumbles this season are tied for second-most in the league.

"I hang my hat on being disruptive, being dominant and rushing the passer," Williams told media after arriving to Dallas. "And also this year, I've been taking a step forward in stopping the run."

Stopping Williams will be a collective effort, considering the defensive tackle's ability to line up at 1-3 technique. Therefore, Jordan Meredith and Dylan Parham must take on the challenge headfirst. Alex Cappa will likely be asked to step up at starting right guard for a third time this season with Jackson Powers-Johnson being placed on injured reserve.

Limiting Williams in his Cowboys debut will be imperative considering some of the woes for the Raiders offense. Geno Smith has been sacked 27 times, the fourth most of any quarterback in the league. Additionally, Ashton Jeanty has been stuffed for a loss or no gain on 28.7 percent of his rushes, the second-highest mark among running backs with at least 50 carries, according to Next Gen Stats.

"He's a fantastic player," Carroll said of Williams. "That's why they went after him and gave up a lot to get him. And everybody wants a 3-technique, and they're hard to find, and there's a handful of guys that really dominate the position. He's in that group of guys, so he's going to make them better without question."

Kyu Blu Kelly vs. George Pickens

Cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly is riding the high of his best performance to date.

The Las Vegas native secured his first two career interceptions last Thursday, along with two pass deflections in the contest. It's been an year of ups and downs for the young cornerback thrust into a starting CB role for the first time in his NFL career. In the first six games of the season, he allowed 327 yards and 23 pass completions as the nearest defender in coverage.

In his last three games for the Raiders, he's allowed three yards and one catch on the eight times he's been targeted.

While Eric Stokes is likely to draw CeeDee Lamb in coverage, it seems Kelly will be on island with George Pickens – which won't be an easy task. Pickens has made an immediate impact for Dallas since they traded for him this offseason from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The receiver ranks fourth in the league in receiving yards (764) and receiving touchdowns (six).

Pickens has a physical and violent play style as a receiver, which aligns with Kelly's strengths as a cornerback. Kelly's two missed tackles are the second fewest of any starting Raiders defensive back this season.
