As soon as 2028, the best players the NFL has to offer could become Olympic medalists.

At the Spring League Meeting in Eagan, Minnesota, NFL club owners unanimously approved for players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28). The sport was approved to become a part of the games by the International Olympic Committee back in October 2023.

"It's an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. "I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. We are thrilled that they will now have that chance."

The Olympic flag football team competition will consist of six men's and six women's teams competing in a five-on-five format. Each participating country can have one NFL player per club on their team, also permitting each team's designated international player to represent their home country.

Each player must tryout for their respective team, with Olympic rosters being selected by each countries' National Olympic Committees based on the proposal by the respective National Federations.

"Players have expressed to us a great desire for the honor of competing in the Olympics, and we're excited that our members will be able to represent their country on the highest international stage," said NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell Jr. "We look forward to working with the league, IFAF, and Olympic authorities on the terms of their participation to ensure players who compete will do so with protections to their health, safety, and job."

This won't be the first time Raiders compete for the gold in the Summer Olympics, as Sam Graddy, Ron Brown and James Jett all won gold in track and field events at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles or the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain.
