By the Numbers: Brock Bowers, tight end room accounted for most of Raiders offense against Jaguars

In spite of a devastating 30-29 overtime loss, there are some positive things the Las Vegas Raiders can take away from their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here are some numbers that show the team trending in the right direction.

29

While the loss is extremely disappointing, this was arguably the best the offense has looked since their Week 1 victory over the New England Patriots.

As the game went into overtime, the Raiders scored 29 points on Jacksonville, the most points scored in a game this season. Geno Smith threw a season-high four touchdowns and the offense went 7-of-10 on third-down conversions.

"The things that we saw earlier in the year when we were trying to patch together just didn't seem like that was the character of the team that we would be. I think this is a glimpse of what our future is about," Pete Carroll said of the offense's showing. "Let's see if we can't get this thing rolling."

Giving the ball to Ashton Jeanty in open space continues to seem like a sure-fire plan.

The rookie running back totaled 89 scrimmage yards which included a 15-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

According to Next Gen Stats, he also recorded a career-high 71 yards after the catch and forced nine missed tackles, his second-most in a game this season. His 46 forced missed tackles on the season is the third-most of any player entering Sunday Night Football.

"We just have to keep getting the ball out there," Carroll said. "We had him out a lot, and the ball went down the field and all that. It is part of our thinking, it's not something we need to all of a sudden realize. He needs to get the ball out on the edge. He's difficult as can be to get down. The big plays are just waiting to happen. So, we certainly want to do that more."

The Silver and Black lined up in 12 (two-tight end set) or 13 personnel (three tight-end set) on 67 percent of their total offensive plays.

With the return of tight end Brock Bowers after missing three games, the Raiders found great success in these offensive groupings. The combination of Bowers, Michael Mayer and Ian Thomas combined for 162 receiving yards, coming in at 57 percent of Geno Smith's total passing yards.

"That's where we started the season too," Carroll said of the offensive scheme. "We were thinking that we were going to lead to that, because we like Mike on the field the same time Brock's out there and all of the flexibility that gives us. I don't think it could be more obvious how valuable Brock was to us yesterday and how he was in the first game too. And then we hit the stretch where he was trying to recover and get back out there. So yeah, that's something that's best for us to mess in and out of the 12 personnel."

Speaking of the tight ends, Brock Bowers had one hell of a game.

He caught 12 catches for 127 yards and a career-high three touchdowns. While Bowers caught eight passes against zone coverage, all three of his receiving touchdowns were against man coverage. With his 12 catches coming on 13 targets, Smith racked up a 147.0 passer rating when targeting the All-Pro playmaker.

"You can just see his impact on the game when he's out there," Smith said. "He's such a phenomenal, such a dynamic player. At one point they were double teaming him, triple teaming him, trying to stop him, and that just opens up the field for the rest of the guys, the other guys get one on ones. You can see when you got that big chess piece, how coordinators got to call games, and how we can call games as well."
