The Las Vegas Raiders announced Klint Kubiak as their new head coach Monday, February 9.
He brings 12 years of NFL coaching experience with him to the desert, having most recently served as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator. In his three seasons as an OC, he's complied 27 regular season wins and a Super Bowl appearance with Seattle.
Let's get into 5 things to know about Kubiak.
Switching lanes
While Kubiak has become known as a top offensive mind in coaching circles, his football origin is on the defensive side of the ball.
After playing wide receiver and defensive back in high school in Denver, Colorado, he committed to Colorado State University where he played safety. In his 34 collegiate games played, he recorded 111 solo tackles, seven tackles for loss and three interceptions.
He was named a team captain his senior season. Kubiak moved over to the offensive side of the ball full-time with his first job out of college as an offensive quality control coach at Texas A&M.
A detour to the oil rigs
Kubiak was pretty close to leaving coaching behind for good following his stint at Texas A&M.
He told media last week that he stepped away from coaching briefly to take a job with an oil-field service company – a potentially lucrative decision to make in the Lone Star State.
However, two weeks into his new career path, he received a call from a former wide receiver he worked with at Texas A&M that made him reevaluate that decision.
"A guy that I was really hard on that I didn't think ever would talk to me again," Kubiak said on Super Bowl LX opening night., "And he basically said, 'Hey, thank you for working with me, helping make me better.'"
After the phone call, he realized what he'd left behind, quit his job the next day and ultimately accepted a position with the Minnesota Vikings to be their offensive quality control coach later that year.
"You build great relationships and you get to teach football instead of a subject," Kubiak said. "So, I didn't want to mess around too much more in the oil-field business."
Football family
Coaching is seemingly in Kubiak's DNA, considering his father is a Super Bowl winning head coach.
Klint's father, Gary Kubiak, was an NFL head coach for 10 seasons for the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos. While in Houston, the elder Kubiak won back-to-back AFC South titles in 2011 and 2012 before ultimately winning Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos in the 2015 season.
Gary Kubiak has developed several NFL head coaches in his career including Kyle Shanahan, Matt LaFleur, Robert Saleh, Vance Joseph and Mike McDaniel. His son Klint is now the next assistant of his to become a head coach, as he began his NFL career on his father's Broncos staff in 2016 as an offensive assistant. The two were also on the same staff at the Minnesota Vikings from 2019-2020 before Gary retired.
With the Raiders' hire, Gary and Klint Kubiak become the 10th father-son head coach duo in NFL history. They're also now the first father-son coaches in NFL history to win a Super Bowl.
Klint's brother, Klay Kubiak, is currently the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and brother Klein Kubiak serves as a national scout for the Dallas Cowboys.
Big game experience
At 38 years old, Klint Kubiak has already coached in two Super Bowls — including one played in what is now his home stadium.
In 2023, Kubiak served as the San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator, helping guide the team to a 12–5 record, an NFC West title and a Super Bowl appearance. Under his direction, quarterback Brock Purdy finished top five in passing yards (4,280), passing touchdowns (31), and completion percentage (69.4). The season ultimately ended in a 25–22 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium.
Two seasons later, Kubiak made it back to the Super Bowl as the offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, redeeming himself in the process. With Kubiak calling the offense, the Seahawks went 14-3 and captured their first divisional title since 2020. The offense ranked first in the league in point differential while ranking inside the top 10 in total yardage and points scored.
In their playoff run, the Seahawks averaged nearly 34 per game – defeating the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX.
From the ground up in Las Vegas
The hope for Kubiak is that he makes the desert his home after bouncing around the league over the last few years.
The Raiders will be his sixth team in six years, having served as either an offensive or passing game coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks. The reasoning for a few of Kubiak's moves were due to unfortunate circumstances. His head coaches with the Vikings (Mike Zimmer), Broncos (Nathaniel Hackett) and New Orleans Saints (Dennis Allen) were dismissed by the end of each of the seasons he was with each team.
His track record speaks for itself despite the changes. In that span of five seasons, Kubiak's offenses have averaged 23.82 points per game.
