Los Raiders volvieron a sufrir un golpe duro en casa. La derrota 24-17 frente a los Broncos no solo los dejó con marca de 2-11, sino que también generó preocupación por la lesión del hombro de Geno Smith en la última jugada del tercer cuarto. Fue un partido donde el esfuerzo estuvo, pero la ejecución y el control del reloj terminaron inclinando la balanza en contra de Las Vegas.
El inicio del encuentro fue un reflejo de lo que ha sido esta temporada: la defensa batalló y estuvo demasiado tiempo en el campo. Los Broncos consumieron casi nueve minutos en su primera serie antes de anotar el touchdown que abrió el marcador. Sin embargo, los Raiders respondieron con autoridad. Al cierre del primer cuarto, Geno Smith encontró a Brock Bowers con un pase de 15 yardas para empatar el marcador.
Lamentablemente, después de ese momento el ataque se estancó. Doce jugadas y seis yardas en el segundo cuarto para una unidad ofensiva que no pudo establecer ritmo mientras Denver ganó terreno con equipos especiales. A pesar de sufrir una séptima derrota consecutiva, Pete Carroll insistió que el grupo sigue unido y con mentalidad positiva.
"La conciencia del equipo dentro del campo mantiene todo unido", dijo Carroll. "Están trabajando durísimo para hacer la siguiente jugada, pensando que el momento va a cambiar. Tenemos una actitud sorprendentemente positiva. Es parte de nuestra cultura, de cómo operamos, y está presente."
Tras solo ver acción en un total de siete jugadas en los primeros 12 partidos de la temporada, Kenny Pickett estuvo sobre el emparrillado en cada serie que la ofensiva tuvo sobre el emparrillado en el último cuarto.
"He visto muchísimo de Kenny en las prácticas", declaró Carroll. "Es activo, rápido, muy atlético, piensa bien. Es claramente un competidor. Entiende el fútbol americano situacional y sabe lo que está pasando. Estoy entrenándolo intensamente porque quiero que esté listo si aparece la oportunidad. Así lo hicimos con Geno durante años. Y cuando llegue el momento, él va a estar listo."
Después de no poder meter al equipo a las diagonales en sus primeras dos jugadas del partido con el equipo estando dentro de la yarda 10 de Denver, Pickett tuvo la oportunidad de nueva cuenta regresar al emparrillado por dos series completas más donde los Raiders anotaron 10 puntos para hacer el marcador más decoroso.
"Llegué aquí una semana antes del inicio de temporada, simplemente tomando todo semana a semana", es como describió su trabajo desde que arribó a Las Vegas por medio de un intercambio con Cleveland. "Aprecio a todos en el vestidor, desde los coaches hasta los entrenadores. Cuando tenga una oportunidad de jugar solo quiero dejarlo todo por ellos, y sé que ellos hacen lo mismo por mí. Es un reto venir desde la banca al final de un juego e intentar encontrar ritmo, pero me alegra que conseguimos puntos. Hay muchas áreas para mejorar, quiero volver a verlo."
Aunque el resultado fue amargo, hubo actuaciones que generan esperanza para el futuro inmediato de los Raiders. El novato Tonka Hemingway consiguió su primera captura de mariscal de campo en la NFL, con el esquinero Darien Porter sumando dos pases defendidos. Mientras que al ataque Jack Bech fue el receptor más productivo del equipo con seis recepciones para cincuenta yardas, ambas marcas personales, además de que Caleb Rogers fue el guardia derecho titular de Las Vegas por segunda semana consecutiva, pero en esta ocasión jugó en el 100% de los snaps ofensivos del equipo.
Maxx Crosby, una vez más, fue una fuerza imparable en la línea defensiva: impuso una nueva marca de la franquicia de tacleadas para pérdida en una temporada, alcanzando 25 tras sumar una captura y dos tacleadas para pérdida de yardaje en este encuentro.
La gran incógnita ahora es el estado de Geno Smith rumbo al duelo contra las Águilas, el primero de dos partidos consecutivos fuera de casa. Con solo cuatro encuentros restantes en el calendario, y una marca de 2-11, los Malosos intentan construir algo a largo plazo.
