100 Days of 100 Jersey Numbers - 89

For a total of 100 days, we'll take a look at the men who have played for the Raiders jersey number by jersey number. This series will highlight some of the greatest players in NFL history. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Some players are superstitious about their jersey number. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Sixteen players have worn jersey No. 89 in Raiders history, all tight ends and wide receivers.

Gene Prebola – TE – 1960

Originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1960, Prebola played in 14 games for the Raiders and caught 33 passes for 303 yards and two TDs. He went on to play three years in Denver.

Drew Buie – WR – 1969-71

The Raiders selected Buie in the 9th round of the 1969 NFL Draft out of Catawba. He played in 42 games with five starts and caught eight passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Steve Sweeney – WR – 1973

The Raiders selected Sweeney in the 9th round of the 1973 NFL Draft. He played in 14 games and caught two passes for 52 yards and one TD.

Ted Kwalik – TE – 1975-76

Kwalik joined the Raiders in 1975 after six years with the 49ers. He wore No. 89 from 1975-76 and switched to No. 88 in 1977. In all, he played in 25 games and caught four passes for 15 yards.

Rich Martini – WR – 1979-80

The Raiders selected Martini in the 7th round of the 1977 NFL Draft out of UC Davis. He played in 32 games with five starts and caught 25 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Martini was a member of the Raiders Super Bowl XV championship team. He went on to play one season with the Saints.

Mark Pattison – WR – 1986

The Raiders selected Pattison in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft out of Washington. He played in two games and caught two passes for 12 yards. He also played for the Rams and the Saints.

Mike Alexander – WR – 1989

The Raiders selected Alexander in the 8th round of the 1988 NFL Draft out of Penn State. He played in 16 games and caught 15 passes for 295 yards and one TD.

Alexander Wright – WR – 1992-94 **

The Raiders acquired Wright (pictured) in 1992 after he played 2 seasons for Dallas. He played in 41 games with 31 starts and caught 55 passes for 931 yards and eight touchdowns. He went on to play two years with the St. Louis Rams.

Trey Junkin – TE – 1996

Junkin joined the Raiders after playing for Buffalo and Washington. He played in 69 games with two starts and caught 13 passes for 188 yards and five TDs. He served primarily as the long snapper on special teams. After wearing No. 87, he returned to the Raiders in 1996 and wore No. 89. Junkin went on to play for Seattle, Arizona and the New York Giants.

Bob Rosenstiel – TE – 1997

Rosenstiel played in four games for the Raiders in 1997.

Rodney Williams – WR – 1998-99

Williams played in six games and returned four kickoffs for 63 yards.

Mondriel Fulcher – TE – 2000-02

The Raiders selected Fulcher in the 7th round of the 2000 NFL Draft out of Miami (Fla.). He played in 25 games with one start.

Ronald Curry – WR – 2003-08

The Raiders selected Curry in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL Draft out of North Carolina. After wearing No. 1 in 2002, he switched to No. 89 and became a fulltime wide receiver after playing quarterback in college. He played in 75 games with 29 starts and caught 193 passes fro 2,347 yards and 13 TDs. Curry also returned seven kickoffs for 131 yards.

Nick Miller – WR – 2009-11

An undrafted free agent out of Southern Utah, Miller played in 11 games and returned 37 punts for 276 yards, and returned six kickoffs for 98 yards. He caught three passes for 40 yards. He went on to play for the St. Louis Rams.

Brian Leonhardt – TE – 2013

An undrafted free agent out of Bemidji State, Leonhardt spent 2013 on the Raiders practice squad. He changed numbers and began wearing No. 87 prior to the 2014 season.

James Jones - WR - 2014-present

Jones signed with the Silver and Black as a free agent before the 2014 season and during his first season in Oakland he played in all 16 ganes, catching 73 passes for 666 yards and six touchdowns.
