Geno Smith shines in New England, breaks 45-year record for most passing yards in a Raiders debut

The numbers may have been a bit misleading heading into Geno Smith's Raiders debut.

Allow me to quickly explain.

Recently, media pundits and analysts have looked into how Smith has performed over the last three seasons in dome stadiums versus open roof stadiums.

In 14 indoor games as Seattle's starting quarterback: 30 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 110.8 passer rating. In 36 games outdoors: 43 touchdowns, 31 interceptions, 89.7 quarterback rating.

Sunday afternoon, Smith entered Gillette Stadium in a pouring rain that didn't seem to let up for four quarters.

With the exception of picked off pass, a masterclass followed suit.

"I'm me. That's all I think about. I don't think about anything else; I'm me," Smith declared postgame. "I know who I am, I know what I can do.

"Mistakes happen, things happen within the game. There was a tipped pass, I made the right read, could've made a better throw. ... Not going to hang my head, I'm keep going. ... I just know who I am. I know what I can do on that field so I never worry."

Smith threw for 362 passing yards, the most in franchise history in a QB's debut – breaking the record set by Dan Pastorini (317) in 1980. Smith also completed 70.6 percent of his throws and threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Tre Tucker on the opening drive.

This was Smith's eighth game since 2022 in which he threw for over 300 yards while completing at least 70 percent of this passes.

So, his head coach wasn't shocked or surprised.

"He's been doing this now. Geno had a regular game today," CarrolI said. "I don't think it was a big statement game or anything like that. I just think that's what he does. And we'll do better than that. He's got it in him to do better than that."

Another impressive feat for Smith was his nine completed passes for 20+ yards against the Patriots, tied for the most in a game in his career. It also tied for the most in a single game by a Raiders quarterback since 1991. He accomplished this while completing a pass to seven different receivers.

"That's how we want to play football," Smith said. "We want to make sure that we make the right reads. I want to make sure that I'm making the right decisions and getting the ball into the hands of the playmakers. We've got a lot of great players and that's something that we can take advantage of. I want to spread the ball around if need be but I want to find the open guy, first and foremost."

Smith is now 8-1 on the road since the start of last season, winning his last seven. Next week will be his first home game as a Raider on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers.

And while Geno might've debunked a statistical myth, it helps that the lavishly domed Allegiant Stadium won't be affected by any weather conditions.
