Raiders Mailbag: The Nation gives their first impressions of the 2025 draft class

Edwin Alvarado said:

"The thing people are not realizing is Pete Carroll chose athletic freaks!"

That part, as the kids say.

NFL Next Gen Stats gave the Raiders the second-highest athleticism grade based of their top seven picks. That's not even including Tommy Mellott, who reportedly recorded a 41-inch vertical and 4.39 speed in the 40-yard dash at his pro day.

You start with first-round pick Ashton Jeanty, who racked up 1,970 rushing yards after contact with 63 runs over 10 yards in 2024. Second-round pick Jack Bech stands around 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and only had one drop in 91 targets with TCU last season. Cornerback Darien Porter and wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr. both ran a 4.30 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, with Porter standing at 6-foot-4, Thornton at 6-foot-5.

Texas Tech offensive lineman Caleb Rogers finished first among all offensive linemen in the 20-yard shuttle, second in the 3-cone drill and fifth in the vertical jump at the Combine. Additionally, Tonka Hemingway finished with the second fastest 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle of all defensive tackles at the event.

This athletic draft class shouldn't come as a surprise based off Carroll's track record with the Seattle Seahawks. You can teach technique and plays, but physical attributes are God given.

Andrew Caskenette from Nevada asks:

"Is Tommy Mellott supposed to be a WR/Kick Returner?"

Director of college scouting Brandon Yeargan said last Saturday that they won't "pigeonhole" Tommy Mellott to one position quite yet.

The Walter Payton Award winner played quarterback at Montana State, but his dual-threat capabilities are what helped make them an FCS powerhouse. He was appointed the nickname "Tommy Touchdown" in his home state with 78 total touchdowns in his collegiate career – passing, rushing and receiving. He began to make waves around the league with an incredible pro day showing.

"I would say we view him as a receiver that's going to have a lot of value in the kicking game, potentially as a returner, as a cover player, maybe play some quarterback, too," Yeargan said. "We're looking really as an athlete/receiver, but he's a unique guy. I mean, his testing numbers were through the roof, 4.41 40, really high vertical jump. His testing was outstanding. Yeah, he threw routes and then he also ran routes too at pro day. So, I don't want to pigeonhole him necessarily, but we think he could do a variety of things."

"I really like the Cam Miller pick late."

While Cam Miller has been considered one of the top FCS quarterbacks since 2021, I personally became familiar with his game in his highly-anticipated 2024 season opener.

Miller went toe-to-toe with Colorado and their eventual Heisman Trophy winning cornerback Travis Hunter, but narrowly suffered defeat, 31-26. He was lights out for the majority of the game, going 18-of-22 for 277 passing yards and a touchdown. He used his feet to slice up the Buffaloes for another 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns, more rushing yardage than Colorado's whole team in the outing. The Bison held the lead for a majority of the game as well.

It's fair to assume that the Raiders were impressed with this showing, along with rest of Miller's season in which he led his team to a 14-2 record and an FCS National Championship victory. It was his second national title as their starting quarterback.

"I just think coming from a pro-style offense at North Dakota State, I'm accustomed to playing under center, playing in the gun, playing a pro-style offense," Miller said in his introductory call with the media. "I think NDSU prepared me well, just with the system, doing under center play action, everything that we did in the gun I think is going to translate to the next level. I'm excited to dive into the playbook and start to understand it a little bit more."
