Notes and quotes from Day 1 of Raiders' 2025 mandatory minicamp

The Las Vegas Raiders are getting a step closer to training camp, reaching nearly full participation for Day 1 of mandatory minicamp.

The energy continues to run high along with the southern Nevada temperatures. Despite the heat, it hasn't got in the way of what many feel has been a successful offseason program up to this point.

"The pieces we've added this offseason, the energy, the direction - Pete [Carroll] has really master crafted coming in and how to do things, and the guys, we're taking it and we're rolling," Kolton Miller said.

"It's been really fun, and we've gotten so much - this is probably one of the most productive OTAs I've been a part of," he added. "It's not easy, like we're kind of flying around. But no, it's been really good, and I'm excited where we're headed."

Here are a few other notes and quotes from the first minicamp practice.

  • The integration of the Raiders' rookie class has been noticeable, with several players handling first-team reps throughout several portions of practice. First-round pick Ashton Jeanty has been handling his workload well, according to veterans in the locker room.
  • "He's such a strong and dynamic back," Miller said. "The way his cuts are so smooth, even if he gets hit, he's still balanced and that's super unique. He can't show his full ability right now during OTAs, but off the field he's very mature. He's a family guy, he brings great energy and it shows a lot of maturity for his age and I'm so excited to block for him."
  • Dont'e Thornton Jr. has seen a lot of reps at outside receiver opposite of Tre Tucker and Jakobi Meyers. He was a constant target for Geno Smith throughout practice, reeling in a highly contested catch in the end zone during red zone period.
  • "He's nice," Jakorian Bennett said of the rookie receiver. "6-foot-5, 4.3 [40-yard dash] fast, so he's got it. But he's going to continue to sharpen it up and he's going to help us a lot."
  • And on the opposite side of the ball, rookie cornerback Darien Porter was seen shadowing Meyers, the team's WR1, during red zone period. Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon also believes Porter will play a big part in kicking game, citing Porter's nearly 1,000 special teams reps in his six years at Iowa State.
  • "When you've played six years in college and you got that many reps, it's practice and he plays fast," McMahon said. "He's a big player that plays really, really fast. He's detailed and he's got a lot of [traits] we can't teach what he can do."
  • Maxx Crosby created consistent pressure on Smith and newly signed safety Jeremy Chinn got a few good pass breakups – including one in the end zone on All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers.
  • While Jeanty will continue to pick up the majority of headlines out of the backfield, Zamir White has seemingly shed some weight. It's still too early too tell how much he's progressed without pads on, but he seems to be heading in the right direction with the competition that's been added to the running back room this offseason.
