Raiders Valiant Effort Falls Short in Foxborough

The New England Patriots defeated the Oakland Raiders 16-9 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., as K Sebastian Janikowski kicked three field goals and New Engalnd came up with an interception in the waning moments.

The Patriots won the coin toss and deferred their choice to the second half. After K Stephen Gostkowski's opening kickoff went for a touchback, the Raiders managed one first down before the Patriots forced a punt. WR Julian Edelman called for and made a fair catch of a 42-yard P Marquette King punt at the New England 18. 

The Raiders forced a three and out and started their next drive at the 19 after a penalty wiped out rookie CB TJ Carrie's put return. K Sebastian Janikowski capped a 13-play, 50-yard drive with a 49-yard field goal that gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead with 4:37 left in the first quarter. 

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff sailed out the back of the end zone for a touchback and the Patriots started at the 20. The Raiders allowed a pair of first downs before forcing a punt. Carrie fielded Allen's 53-yard punt and was dropped immediately at the Oakland 17. 

The Raiders drove to near midfield before the Patriots forced a punt. WR Rod Streater was shaken up with a foot injury on a 3rd down completion to TE Mychal Rivera. Edeleman returned King's 48-yard punt 7 yards to the Patriots 16.  QB Tom Brady capped the 15-play, 84-yard drive with a 6-yard TD pass to TE Rob Gronkowski. The extra point was good and the Pats took a 7-3 lead with 4:14 left in the 2nd quarter. The ensuing kickoff went for a touchback and the Raiders started at the 20. The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt. King's punt took a Patriots bounce and was downed at the 50. The Patriots settled for a 21-yard FG and a 10-3 halftime lead.

Janikowski's opening kickoff of the second half went for a touchback and the Patriots started at the 20. The Raiders forced a three and out as DE Justin Tuck sacked Brady on 3rd and long. Carrie returned the punt to the Patriots 48. The Raiders drove to the Pats 19 before settling for a field goal attempt. The successful 37-yard kick cut the Patriots lead to 10-6 with 9:39 left in the 3rd quarter.

Safety Patrick Chung fielded the ensuing kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone for a touchback and the Patriots started at the 20. The Raiders allowed a couple of first downs before forcing a punt thanks to rookie LB Khalil Mack's big hit on Brady forcing an incomplete pass. Carrie called for and made a fair catch at the Oakland 14.

The Raiders settled for a 47-yard field goal that cur the Patriots lead to 10-9 with 2:21 left in the 3rd.

WR Matthew Slater fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it 26 yards to the Patriots 41. The Patriots drove to the Raiders 2-yard before settling for a field goal attempt. The 20-yard kick put the Pats up 13-9 with 13:42 left in the 4th quarter.

Murray fielded the ensuing kickoff 9 yards deep and took a knee. After the touchback, the Raiders started at the 20. The Raiders went three and out and the Patriots started at the 19 after King's punt was downed.

The Patriots added a 36-yard Gostkowski field goal to give them a 16-9 lead with 6:20 left in the game.

Murray fielded the ensuing kickoff 9 yards deep and took a knee for a touchback. The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt. Edelman called for and made a fair catch at the New England 27. The Raiders forced a three-and-out and Allen came on to punt.

Carrie pinballed his way out to the Oakland 37. An apparent game-tying TD run by McFadden was called back on a holding penalty. DT Vince Wilfork intercepted a batted pass and New England took over with less than a minute to play.

The now 0-3 Raiders travel to London to face the Miami Dolphins in an International Series game at Wembley Stadium next Sunday.
