Quick Hits: Pete Carroll discusses coaching change, plus provides injury updates on JPJ, Dylan Parham and Geno Smith

The Las Vegas Raiders are undergoing a few changes before their Week 11 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon was relieved of his duties Friday. Derius Swinton II will step into the role in an interim capacity, with experience in the same position for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.

Additionally, several players were injured in Week 10: quarterback Geno Smith and guards Jackson Powers-Johnson and Dylan Parham.

Read through for what Carroll said regarding the team Monday afternoon following their walkthrough practice.

On the decision to move on from special teams coordinator Tom McMahon:

"I thought we needed a change. And I love Tom. He's a great dude, and he's done a great job for us. He's a career ball coach, but I thought we just needed a change, and part of that is that I want to see what Derius does with it and see how he handles it. ... But I think it was time for a change there, and that's why we did that."

On his initial evaluation of interim special teams coordinator Derius Swinton II:

"He's very good communicator, very active on the field, hands on type of coach, really skilled in scheme. There's not time to change a bunch of our scheme at this point, but it's to emphasize and focus on things that we think we needed to get better. And so, I'm hoping that the voice change will help us in that regard."

Injury update on Jackson Powers-Johnson

"He will go on IR. ... And it does open up opportunities that we're going to give some guys a shot at it and see how that looks. We've been kind of working the backup spot there for some time now, so that's kind of in line with what's been going on. We're going to miss JPJ. He plays his butt off and really loves this program and shows it in everything that he does, but it's going to be a while before he gets back. But the IR thing will take care of that."

On status of Dylan Parham and Geno Smith:

"[Geno Smith] was out there today. He feels pretty good."

"[Dylan Parham] was out there today also. So, with a long week, we have a chance for both those guys to be ready to go."

On cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly, who had two interceptions against Denver Broncos:

"He played a really good fundamental game, which he does a lot. He really understands the principles of staying on top and working his technique. He's a really good tackler, and he's got very good hand eye coordination. He showed it on that ball. It was a heck of a catch to make under those circumstances and change that situation in the game drastically, and even the next – the tip that he grabbed, he very aggressively went after that ball and snatched out of the air, just showing that he's comfortable playing the position. So, I'm really happy with both those guys that played the right corner spot. The corners have been playing pretty good football, and Kyu took advantage of his opportunities really well."

On safety Lonnie Johnson Jr.'s return:

"He has a lot of confidence, and he brings a lot of confidence from his experience and all of that. He's working with Marcus [Robertson] and Joey [Joe Woods]. He knows those guys really well. We trust the heck out of him. We were really excited about his role as he would fit it into the rest of the fellows when we started this thing off. So, he's excited about showing it, and we're excited about saying it. He's just getting started. I mean, this won't be his best game. He's going to improve as he goes, gains his confidence and all that, gets a chance to tackle a few more guys. He had a couple nice tackles in the game, but he's a very well-versed football player and has a lot of variety to the things he adds."

The Las Vegas Raiders and UNLV School of Public Health partnered together to host middle school students for the R.U.S.H. program focusing on the fundamentals of flag football, nutrition and mental health.
