Los Raiders iniciaron su temporada 2025 de manera soñada, conquistando por primera vez en la historia el Estadio Gillette con un triunfo sobre Nueva Inglaterra. Las Vegas mostró carácter, resiliencia y un sello claro en el debut oficial de Pete Carroll como su entrenador en jefe.
"Es un día realmente importante para nosotros", declaró un emocionado Carroll. "Logramos venir de atrás y ganar en la segunda mitad creyendo todo el tiempo que íbamos a encontrar la manera. La defensa hizo un trabajo tremendo al contenerlos, detener terceras oportunidades y jugar con una dureza increíble. Estoy muy emocionado por nuestros muchachos. Hemos trabajado muy duro para llegar a este punto, y entrar al vestidor para celebrar juntos fue muy especial".
El mariscal de campo de los Raiders, Geno Smith, completó más del 70% de sus pases y fue pieza fundamental en la remontada, sumando un total de 362 yardas y una anotación por medio del ataque aéreo.
"Estoy muy orgulloso de mis compañeros, siempre es una bendición ganar en la NFL", aseguró Geno. "Los Patriotas son un buen equipo, y siempre habrá altibajos en un partido. El mensaje del entrenador (Carroll) es mantener la calma y nunca juzgar antes de tiempo, porque son cuatro cuartos para jugar. Supimos reagruparnos en el vestidor y ejecutar en la segunda mitad".
Durante la primera mitad Smith vivió una gran serie inaugural de la temporada, en la que movió al equipo 66 yardas en 6 jugadas, incluyendo una conexión anotadora de 26 yardas con Tre Tucker para abrir la pizarra. Pero en la segunda serie lanzó una intercepción, la cual Nueva Inglaterra capitalizó al convertirla en puntos. La ofensiva de los Malosos tardó más de 20 minutos en mover las cadenas de nueva cuenta, haciéndolo hasta el minuto final de la primera mitad, previo a irse al descanso de medio tiempo abajo en la pizarra 10-7.
"Lo digo siempre: yo soy yo", aseveró Smith sobre cómo mantuvo la confianza tras su primera intercepción del año. "No pienso en nada más. Sé quién soy y lo que puedo hacer. Los errores pasan, fue un pase desviado y el rival hizo la jugada. No voy a agachar la cabeza, sigo adelante. Confío en lo que puedo hacer en el campo y nunca me preocupo".
El corredor novato Ashton Jeanty no vivió la mejor de las tardes en su debut como profesional en temporada regular, corriendo para 38 yardas en 19 acarreos, pero anotó su primer touchdown en la NFL, con el cual los Raiders retomaron la ventaja, la cual no dejarían ir. Además, el ala cerrada Brock Bowers y el receptor abierto Jakobi Meyers se combinaron para sumar 200 yardas por medio de producción aérea.
"Es divertido estar de vuelta", dijo Bowers, quien salió del partido en el último cuarto de manera precautoria por una molestia de rodilla. "Creo que todo es fruto del trabajo en la temporada baja y el campo de entrenamiento. Hoy se vio reflejado lo que hemos estado preparando".
La defensiva de los Malosos marcó una gran diferencia, siendo acreditados con cuatro capturas y un trabajo efectivo en tercera oportunidad: solo 4 convertidas en 14 oportunidades. La intercepción de Isaiah Pola-Mao en el arranque de la segunda mitad fue clave en el impulso del equipo al arrancar la segunda mitad, ya que después de ella los Malosos anotaron su segundo touchdown del partido.
"Cosas buenas pasan cuando la presión al pasador y la cobertura trabajan de la mano", aseguró Pola Mao, quien obtuvo la segunda intercepción de su carrera en la NFL. "Fue lo que ocurrió, el balón quedó en el aire y solo tuve que atraparlo. Eso nos dio energía para arrancar fuerte después del descanso".
Los Raiders no solo consiguieron un triunfo inaugural, sino que rompieron un muro histórico al ganar por primera vez en Gillette Stadium, en la costa este que tradicionalmente se le ha complicado a esta franquicia. Con un entrenador que predica la competencia constante, un quarterback confiado en su juego, un novato que ya dejó huella y una defensa que respondió en los momentos clave, la Nación Raider tiene motivos de sobra para ilusionarse con lo que promete esta temporada.
