Training Camp Notebook 8/20: Tyree Wilson, Maxx Crosby tear up the trenches

Read through for notes, quotes and observations from Wednesday's practice.

Offense

  • Geno Smith's quest to get the ball to Dont'e Thornton Jr. is still a work a progress. Smith took three deep shots to the rookie receiver in team period, one caught for a touchdown, one overthrown with blanket coverage and another dropped by Thornton.
  • "You see G [Geno Smith] is looking for him and he's trying to give him chances to fit in," Pete Carroll said. "We've done a lot of it in practice, the targets we've had in the game was leaning towards throwing the ball down the field by design. Geno is trying to get him to come alive."
  • It seems Alex Bachman and Collin Johnson are high in the competition for one of the final spots in the receiver room. Both continue to maximize on their opportunities which has made for a deeper receiving corps than I initially expected coming into training camp. Both have caught four passes each in the two preseason games, with Bachman racking up nearly 13 yards a reception.
  • "There's certain opportunities that you're going to get, certain opportunities you're not going to get," Bachman said last week. "At the end of the day I just control what I can control. I always have the belief that I can perform well."
  • Alex Cappa has been back at practice this week after sustaining a rib injury, and was seen switching on and off with Jackson Powers-Johnson for first-team reps.
  • Tight end Michael Mayer had an impressive day run blocking, opening things up for Ashton Jeanty and Zamir White in team period.

Defense

  • Maxx Crosby had two would've been sacks in team period. The first when sniffing out a play action pass by Aidan O'Connell and the second on Geno Smith. Crosby also had his way during 1-on-1 drills against all the offensive linemen he faced.
  • During red zone drills, Patrick Graham and his defense threw a lot of blitzes at the quarterbacks. This resulted in two would've been sacks for Tyree Wilson. The edge rusher has sparingly lined up at defensive tackle throughout camp and the preseason, but on Wednesday, he saw the most reps inside than any other practice I've seen to date.
  • "I feel like being able to work with multiple guys, make the rush right and also be able to get on the defender quick," Wilson said of what he enjoys about playing defensive tackle. "You know it's the quickest path to the quarterback being inside. You go through the guard, the quarterback's really going to be standing right there."
  • Jamal Adams also got a sack during red zone drills. Lining up at multiple spots on the field as a linebacker, his versatility could make him an ultimate chess piece in this defense.
  • Terrell Edmunds mixed in for first-team reps with Chris Smith II at safety. Edmunds signed with the team following the injury Lonnie Johnson Jr. sustained in the mock game. Edmunds had five total tackles in last Saturday's preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.
  • "He brings you this sense of the experience," Carroll said. "You can see when you watch his film that he's done ton of stuff. He's done all the stuff at the line of scrimmage, on the deep end, coverage wise, blitz wise. He brings that to us and he has a level of confidence that's obvious. ... Right in the middle of competing for snaps and all of that."
