Raiders Mailbag: What do different head coach candidates bring to the table?

John Smith from California asks:

"Why are people so high on Davis Webb when he only has three years experience as a QB coach?"

Let's dig into what Davis Webb has done with the Broncos quarterbacks room.

Named Denver's quarterback coach in 2023, Webb has played a role in developing first-rounder Bo Nix into a potential franchise cornerstone. In Nix's two seasons as the starter, he's won 24 games, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to post 20+ wins, 7,500+ passing yards and 50+ passing touchdowns in their first two seasons.

Webb was promoted to offensive pass game coordinator this year, and the Broncos won the AFC West title for the first time since 2015 and made it to the AFC Championship Game.

"He came highly recommended from a bunch of different coaches," Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton said when Webb was hired in 2023. "Brian Daboll, Eli Manning, I spoke to a number of people. I kept hearing the same things about him, so we brought him in. … I remember him as a player, but I didn't know him at all. He did a really good job. … He's a coach's kid, Davis is. He had a file on his computer of every game plan that he's ever had since he was in high school, then college, then Texas Tech. Then, Mahomes comes in and then he transfers. It was really impressive just going through the process."

The Raiders conducted a second interview with Webb on January 26.

Jack Vict asks:

"Will the new coach determine whether draft is offense or defense heavy?"

It's obvious to assume the new coach will have a handprint on what the Raiders decide to do in the upcoming draft.

Whether the new Raiders head coach comes from an offensive or defensive background, I don't see it affecting the team's draft strategy because of the vast array of needs across the roster. Offensive and defensive line, as well as wide receiver and cornerback, could be premium picks for the Silver and Black. Additionally, their approach could be altered by who joins the roster in free agency.

"We're going to attack this entire offseason with an extremely open mind," GM John Spytek said earlier this month. "And anybody that can help bolster that offensive line and do the job required will be considered. We have a lot of cap space; we've got some elite draft picks and maybe adding a veteran presence in there or two would be helpful but not necessarily an absolute necessity. We're not going to begin with the end in mind."
