Raiders Mailbag: With a slew of injuries to offense, who can step up Monday night?

Scott Boe asks:

"With injuries to Miller, JPJ, Parham, who's time is it?"

Weeks after left tackle Kolton Miller was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, guard Jackson Powers-Johnson met the same fate following their Thursday Night Football loss.

Dylan Parham, who also suffered an ankle injury against the Broncos, had a bit more of a positive prognosis. Head Coach Pete Carroll noted that Parham was a participant in the team's Monday walkthrough.

As for replacing JPJ, those responsibilities could be placed either on veteran Alex Cappa or rookie Caleb Rogers from Texas Tech.

Cappa has stepped in a right guard this season when Powers-Johnson missed action due to a concussion. Cappa has 98 career starts, which include two with the Silver and Black.

As for Rogers, he has yet to play in an NFL game after being selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. But that could change soon considering the shallow depth of the interior offensive line.

"That's why I'm in the NFL, is to take advantage of that opportunity," Rogers said of potentially seeing the field. "So I'm extremely excited. Love the group that's around me around right now ... hopefully they're excited for me too. I'm just ready to get to the next point, next moment, day by day."

It's also worth noting Will Putnam is another candidate in line for more playing time, after stepping in for an injured Parham at Mile High Stadium for 27 snaps.

Aaron Kozina from Maryland asks:

"When are we going to see another player put pressure on the QB while Maxx gets double and triple-teamed?"

This is a valid question, considering how the Raiders pass rush has performed so far.

While the rushing defense has been up to par, allowing the fourth-fewest rushing yards per attempt, getting after the quarterback has been a difficult task. The unit is currently 26th in the league in both sacks (18) and quarterback pressure percentage (18) and 29th in quarterback hits (37). However, the Raiders are 13th in the league in fewest passing yards allowed, which could be more of a testament to an arguably underrated secondary.

Maxx Crosby, leading his team in sacks (5) and quarterback pressures (16), has found success despite being chip blocked over 18 percent of snaps and double teamed on nearly 50 percent of snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

With such an emphasis being placed on stopping Crosby, it's on the rest of the defensive line to find solutions to win their 1-on-1 matchups. While Malcolm Koonceis still getting in the groove after missing the entirety of the 2024 season, he's second behind Crosby in average get off speed at the line of scrimmage at 0.82 seconds. Defensive tackle Jonah Laulu could also continue making strides for the Raiders pass rush, having accumulated four sacks and nine pressures.

"One thing I'd say I'm trying to focus on is just continuing to hone into my technique because things are starting to click more for me mentally going into my second year," Laulu said Tuesday. "Last year I was all over the place, and so this year, it's clicking for me. Things are making a lot more sense to me and understanding what's happening. Now I just got to hone into my technique and then take some chances, go out there and make some plays and be disruptive."

@Jalapeno87 asks:

"What's up with AOC?"

Aidan O'Connell was designated to return from the injured reserve list on Oct. 29, meaning the team has 21 days from that point to activate him to the roster or be placed back on injured reserve.

The quarterback suffered a wrist injury in the preseason, which has not only forced him to miss time but prompted the Raiders to trade for Kenny Pickett to back up Geno Smith. O'Connell has been a full participant in practice for the past two weeks and there is a possibility he could be made available for Monday Night Football if the team feels he is ready.

Smith suffered a quad injury against the Denver Broncos in Week 10, and in the case he can't play, O'Connell would be competing with Pickett for the start against the Cowboys.

In O'Connell's 20 career games played with 17 starts, he's complied 3,830 and 20 passing touchdowns.
