Dispararse en el pie no es bueno, hacerlo como visitante hace aún más complicado el poder obtener un triunfo en la NFL y eso es lo que sucedió para los Raiders en su visita a Denver. Los Malosos terminaron con tres pérdidas de balón y once castigos en su derrota frente a los Broncos por marcador final de 34-18.
"Sabíamos que habría una o dos jugadas en el juego que no nos iban a salir bien, y obviamente, eso sucedió", declaró tras el partido el entrenador en jefe de los Raiders Antonio Pierce. "Al final del día, regresamos aquí (al vestidor) durante el medio tiempo y es un juego (cerrado). Tenemos que seguir jugando, pero simplemente no hicimos las suficientes jugadas y, obviamente, los castigos y las pérdidas de balón nos mataron".
El inicio del partido fue uno positivo para Las Vegas, con los Raiders abriendo el marcador tras solo haber transcurrido poco más de 2 minutos después de la patada inicial con la primera recepción anotadora en la NFL para el novato Brock Bowers. Entraron al segundo cuarto con una ventaja de 10-0 con un gol de campo de 40 yardas de Daniel Carlson. A pesar de que Denver acortó distancias a 10-3, los Malosos estaban jugando fútbol americano complementario con las tres fases del juego poniendo al equipo en una posición ideal para extender su ventaja, pero teniendo primera y gol desde la yarda número cinco se dio la jugada que cambió el rumbo del partido. Gardner Minshew lanzó un pase alto en la dirección en la que se encontraban Bowers y Jakobi Meyers, pero acabó siendo el esquinero Pat Surtain II el que se hizo del ovoide y lo regresó 100 yardas hasta la zona de anotación, empatando el juego a 10 con el punto extra. Después de tener 202 yardas a la ofensiva entre sus primeras tres series ofensivas, los Raiders solo consiguieron 128 yardas en el resto del partido, incluyendo 80 de las cuales fueron obtenidas después de que los Broncos habían anotado 34 puntos de manera consecutiva y tenían una ventaja comandante.
"Pensé que tuvimos un buen arranque, pero arruiné nuestro impulso con la intercepción que terminó en el touchdown de Denver", aseguró Gardner Minshew. "Al final, no hice un buen trabajo para darnos una oportunidad de ser competitivos en el juego, eso es culpa mía. Volveremos al trabajo mañana como siempre y seguiremos adelante".
El 'pick 6' de Surtain marcó un antes y un después del partido, posterior a esa jugada la ofensiva de los Raiders solo tuvo dos primeras oportunidades entre sus siguientes siete series ofensivas, entre las cuales tuvieron 4 tres y fuera, además de dos pases interceptados. A pesar de que el ataque negro y plata se vio estancado, la defensa dejo el partido en gran parte como uno cerrado, con Denver arriba por 20-10 al finalizar el tercer parcial, pero en el ultimo cuarto se salió de control para Las Vegas con dos touchdowns mas de Denver.
Pierce buscó darle un revulsivo a la ofensiva de Las Vegas al enviar a Aidan O'Connell al campo para suplir a Gardner Minshew en el tercer cuarto, pero lanzó una intercepción en su tercer pase del juego después de no haber movido las cadenas en su primera serie ofensiva. 'A.P.' dijo que no ha tomado una decisión aún sobre quién será el mariscal de campo titular en el próximo partido de los Malosos.
"En ese momento, solo trataba de completar pases y de mover el balón por el campo de cualquier manera que pudiéramos", dijo O'Connell sobre su mentalidad cuando entró al partido como relevo. "Nos quedamos estancados en esa primera posesión y luego en la intercepción pude haber hecho un mejor pase a Brock (Bowers), y luego armar una pequeña serie al final".
Después de entrar al partido clasificados como el segundo equipo más disciplinado en la liga con 17 castigos para 133 yardas entre sus primeros cuatro juegos, los Raiders tuvieron 11 castigos para 79 yardas. Además, sigue la racha de perder el ovoide al menos una vez en cada encuentro de la temporada 2024 y tuvieron su segundo partido con tres pérdidas del año.
"Eso es sólo disciplina", aseveró el ala defensiva Maxx Crosby sobre los errores que les costaron caro a los Raiders. "Tuvimos demasiados castigos, perdimos el balón demasiado, no quitamos el balón en la defensa. No vas a ganar así. No vas a ganar de visitante así. Jugaron bien. Hay que darle crédito a Denver, pero tenemos que ser mejores".
La derrota hizo que el regreso a la acción de Maxx Crosby terminara eclipsado, ya que a pesar de obtener su decimotercer partido con múltiples capturas de mariscal de campo al derribar en dos ocasiones a Bo Nix, lo mas importante es el resultado colectivo y los Malosos no lograron encontrar constancia en el juego. Para echarle sal a la herida, el tackle defensivo Christian Wilkins salió del partido con una lesion de pie tras haber conseguido su primera captura de mariscal de campo completa con los colores negro y plata.
Una lesión más para un equipo que tuvo a cinco jugadores del roster activo descartados por lesión, además de tres elementos en la lista de reserva lesionados IR después de haber participado como titulares. Pero hay que encontrar la manera de sacar el resultado deseado con los jugadores que se tiene disponibles, se tiene poco menos de una semana de preparación para su partido como locales frente a los Acereros de Pittsburgh en el Estadio Allegiant.
