Las Vegas volvió a sufrir otro duro golpe al caer 24-10 ante Cleveland en el Estadio Allegiant, acumulando su quinta derrota consecutiva y quedando con marca de 2 ganados y 9 perdidos. Y apenas horas después del partido, llegó otra noticia: el coordinador ofensivo Chip Kelly fue destituido, marcando el tercer año seguido en el que el equipo prescinde del hombre quien tenía ese cargo al inicio de la temporada.
La falta de producción ofensiva, tema constante durante toda la campaña, volvió a ser el principal factor en esta derrota. Las Vegas no logró conseguir su único touchdown hasta el último cuarto, segundo juego consecutivo en lo que eso sucede, mientras que fueron limitados a solo una anotación ofensiva por tercer partido seguido.
"Hicimos un movimiento anoche en la posición de coordinador con Chip (Kelly), lo hablamos a fondo y fue una decisión que tomamos por el bien de la organización, algo que teníamos que hacer," dijo el entrenador en jefe Pete Carroll al explicar la necesidad de un cambio inmediato. "En este momento, Greg Olson está trabajando en el plan de juego y será el encargado de mandar las jugadas. No hemos definido todavía cómo funcionará todo más allá de esta semana, pero nuestros muchachos ya están metidos en el trabajo."
La falta de explosividad ofensiva se vio agravada por dos lesiones de tobillo, en primera instancia con el ala cerrada Michael Mayer saliendo del juego en la primera mitad, mientras que Ashton Jeanty dejó el juego en el último cuarto. La disponibilidad de ambos elementos será evaluada durante la semana.
El equipo se vio afectado de gran manera por una línea defensiva de los Cafés que es muy disruptiva, capturando a Geno Smith en 10 ocasiones, incluyendo 3 de ellas por parte del líder de la liga en ese departamento Myles Garrett.
"Su línea defensiva es muy buena, es una gran defensa en general", dijo el ala cerrada al describir las dificultades para generar ritmo. "Nosotros mismos nos pusimos en situaciones complicadas con castigos y jugadas negativas, así que tenemos que mantenernos en la ruta correcta. Definitivamente es muy frustrante. En el plano defensivo, los Raiders volvieron a mostrar esfuerzo y energía, generando un par de pérdidas de balón con la primera intercepción de Charles Snowden como profesional y un balón suelto forzado por Jeremy Chinn que recuperó Elandon Roberts. Además de un Maxx Crosby inspirado, quien impuso una marca personal al sumar cinco tacleadas para pérdida de yardaje. Lamentablemente no ha sido suficiente para compensar una ofensiva que no ha logrado encontrar la manera de producir de forma constante.
"A este punto, sabes que no estás jugando por la postemporada, lo cual es desafortunado, pero tienes que seguir presentándote todos los días con actitud positiva y seguir trabajando", habló con honestidad Crosby sobre la realidad de la temporada. "Trabajamos todo el año para tener 17 oportunidades, eso es todo lo que puedes hacer. Puedes llorar y quejarte, pero es lo que es. Ahora juegas por amor al juego; estamos en la NFL, nada está garantizado. Mañana no está garantizado para nadie, así que hay que seguir presentándonos y continuar trabajando".
Con la salida de Kelly, la ofensiva queda temporalmente en manos de Greg Olson, quien ya ha ocupado ese rol anteriormente en la franquicia. El reto es mayúsculo: rescatar lo que queda de temporada, reconstruir la confianza de elementos que son importantes para el futuro del equipo como Ashton Jeanty y Brock Bowers, además de encontrar cualquier tipo de estabilidad ofensiva.
Las Vegas regresa a la actividad divisional ante dos equipos con una identidad defensiva que le pueden complicar los partidos a los Raiders, quienes visitarán a los Cargadores de Los Angeles en la semana 13 y recibirán a los Broncos de Denver en la semana 14.
