Vaya diferencia hacen las 97 horas entre el final de la blanqueada que sufrieron los Raiders ante Minnesota y el arranque de su juego frente a los Cargadores de Los Ángeles. Las Vegas se tardó menos de siete minutos para abrir el marcador y no voltearon hacia atrás al propinarle una paliza a su rival divisional por marcador final de 63 a 21, anotando la mayor cantidad de puntos en un partido en su historia.
"No importa contra quién juegues, anotar al menos 60 puntos en la NFL es difícil", dijo el entrenador en jefe interino Antonio Pierce. "Pero simplemente ver a los muchachos entender que si ejecutamos y hacemos las cosas de la manera correcta ... lo escuchas todo el tiempo, ¿verdad? Es una especie de cliché, creer en el proceso y creo que los muchachos lo han hecho. Se recuperaron y, como les dije a ellos el martes, porque para ser honesto, todos estábamos caídos. Lo mejor que hicieron fue venir a trabajar y su forma de pensar, su mentalidad, su energía, el ánimo en el edificio, la forma en que hablaban. Tuve que darme una cachetada a mi mismo y salirme de ese bajón. Ellos me sacaron del mal momento. Felicidades a nuestros jugadores porque eso es lo que hacen los líderes y los hombres de verdad. Traen a otros con ellos, me trajeron a mí y demonios, hoy pateamos trasero".
Fútbol americano complementario en todo su apogeo fue lo que se vivió en el Estadio Allegiant, los Malosos arrancaron el juego con un tres y fuera defensivo que fue seguido por una serie que culminó con Zamir White metiéndose a las diagonales para poner los primeros puntos en el marcador. Esto fue seguido por la defensa negro y plata consiguiendo generar perdidas de balón en jugadas consecutivas por conducto de balones sueltos, dejando a la ofensiva en territorio enemigo y capitalizaron con pases anotadores de Aidan O'Connell a Tre Tucker y Jakobi Meyers para tomar una ventaja comandante de 21-0 en el primer cuarto.
"Aparte de la semana pasada, creo que hemos estado haciendo un buen trabajo comenzando los juegos rápido", aseguró el mariscal de campo Aidan O'Connell. "Ambos lados del balón comenzaron rápido este juego. Anotamos puntos a la ofensiva, mientras la defensa consiguió paradas y pérdidas de balón, eso es enorme. Alimenta tu confianza cuando sabes que el otro lado del balón está jugando bien. Fue un esfuerzo de todo el equipo. Empezar rápido es realmente importante, pero hay que mantenerlo y pensé que lo hicimos".
Las Vegas no quitó el dedo del renglón y capitalizó cuando se le presentaron oportunidades en el segundo cuarto. En primera instancia con DJ Turner realizando una gran jugada en equipos especiales al quitarle el ovoide al regresador de patadas de despeje Derius Davis para dejar al ataque en la zona roja, lo cual fue aprovechado con una conexión aérea entre O'Connell y Michael Mayer en lo que sería la primera de tres anotaciones en el segundo parcial, ya que Brandon Bolden obtuvo su primer acarreo anotador con los Raiders tras un snap directo que tomó en la yarda 26 y Tre Tucker completó una recepción de 20 yardas en las diagonales con solo 31 segundos restantes en el cuarto. Tras no tener anotaciones entre las primeras 14 semanas de la temporada, Tucker consiguió sus primeras dos en la NFL en este partido. Al ir al frente 42-0 al medio tiempo, los Raiders anotaron la mayor cantidad de puntos en una mitad en la historia de la franquicia, pero eso no iba a detener el embate de los Malosos.
"Sabíamos al medio tiempo cuál era el récord", declaró Pierce sobre la marca de 59 puntos anotados por los Raiders el 24 de Octubre del 2010 en Denver ante los Broncos. "Me dejaron saber de ello y queríamos ser agresivos sin importar cuál fuera el marcador. Incluso si sólo tuviéramos 21 o 10 (puntos) íbamos a ser agresivos y esa era nuestra mentalidad. Hablé con nuestro equipo la semana pasada sobre jugar mejor en la segunda mitad y pensé que lo hicimos. Esto fue jugar una segunda mitad completa y no quitar el pie del acelerador y mis respetos a ellos porque esa fue su mentalidad".
Pierce quería más y su equipo le dio más. Su ofensiva tomó el campo para el inicio del tercer cuarto y movieron el balón 75 yardas en 9 jugadas, culminando con una jugada reversible donde Jakobi Meyers acabó lanzando el ovoide a Davante Adams, quien estaba abierto en las diagonales para conseguir el séptimo touchdown ofensivo del partido para los Malosos. 'Kobi' completó dos pases en este partido, llegando a seis en su carrera profesional, de los cuales tres han sido para anotación. Meyers originalmente fue reclutado por la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte como mariscal de campo, pero temprano en su carrera colegial hizo la transición a la posición de receptor abierto.
Si bien Jakobi sorprendió a propios y extraños con sus dos pases efectivos en este encuentro, O'Connell logró obtener cuatro pases anotadores en este partido, su primero con múltiples touchdowns por aire. De hecho, la noche del jueves consiguió la misma cantidad de pases anotadores que entre sus primeros siete partidos en la liga.
"Nunca perdí la confianza (en él)", aseveró Pierce. "Muchas preguntas fueron hechas a lo largo de la semana y dejé muy claro que nunca he dudado en nada (con Aidan O'Connell). Dije que seguiría evaluando esto. Pero tomé esa decisión con Aidan cuando asumí el cargo de entrenador en jefe interino y no creo que debo ir en contra de mis instintos. Aidan es un novato. Cuando yo era novato y jugaba, cometía errores. Tuve partidos feos y es difícil jugar en la posición que él juega, va a tener días difíciles y tuvo un día difícil en la ofensiva la semana pasada. ¿Pero sabes lo que hizo el lunes? Fue el primero en el edificio. ¿Sabes que hizo ayer? Fue el último en el edificio, no se fue y estuvo allí todo el día hasta que hizo todo bien. Igual hoy, no salió del edificio en todo el día después de nuestra junta matutina. Aquí hay un hombre que tiene una gran oportunidad, al igual que yo, y la está aprovechando, y esta noche está del lado ganador".
A pesar de tener cuatro series ofensivas mas en este partido, el ataque negro y plata no volvió a meterse a las diagonales, pero eso no significó que los Raiders no pusieron más puntos en la pizarra, ya que la defensa se encargó de ello. Primero con los Raiders forzando su cuarto balón suelto del partido, el cual se dio por conducto de una captura de mariscal de campo de Malcolm Koonce, su segundo 'strip-sack' del juego, el cual fue recuperado por John Jenkins y regresado 44 yardas hasta la zona de anotación. Dos jugadas después, el esquinero Jack Jones logró leer a la perfección un pase pantalla de Easton Stick hacia Austin Ekeler y brincó la ruta para con una mano interceptar el ovoide y llevárselo 22 yardas para el 'pick-6' con el que los Raiders anotaron la mayor cantidad de puntos en la historia de la franquicia, superando por primera vez la barrera de las 60 unidades en el marcador.
"No podía dejar que se me escapara esta vez", aseveró Jones tras estar cerca de interceptar a Joshua Dobbs de Minnesota el domingo. "La semana pasada estuve tal vez a un paso de conseguirlo. Esta semana tuve que afinar todas mis técnicas y todo lo que tenía que hacer para lograr esa jugada. Conseguir el pick-6 está bien, pero quiero ganar. Ganar se siente mucho mejor. Estábamos pateando trasero en el campo".
La blanqueada ante Minnesota sin duda alguna dolió y pegó duro en el equipo, pero siempre predican la regla de las 24 horas, donde puedes celebrar un triunfo o estar decepcionado con un descalabro por ese lapso de tiempo, cuando expiran esas 24 horas es el comenzar la preparación para el siguiente partido y buscar el objetivo de terminar 1-0 esa semana. Los Raiders hicieron eso con un reto enorme de tener una semana corta, con solo tres días entre días de partido y lo dieron todo sobre el emparrillado en las tres fases del juego ante los Cargadores.
"Teníamos mucho que demostrarnos a nosotros mismos", dijo el receptor abierto Davante Adams. "No tenía nada que ver con ninguna de las cosas externas. Obviamente, no jugamos a nuestro nivel la semana pasada y al tener una semana corta, lo hablamos en la conferencia prensa de que eso es lo que quieres, poder tener la oportunidad de regresar y corregir los errores para estar del lado correcto de la historia. Es bueno venir aquí y hacer algo que ningún equipo ha hecho como Raider y sumar tantos puntos, es importante para nosotros".
Los Malosos demostraron su resiliencia como equipo. La derrota frente a Minnesota pudo haber sido la adversidad con la que tiraran la toalla y no lo hicieron. Siguen jugando por la oportunidad de tener una oportunidad de seguir vivos en la temporada 2023. La postemporada parece un objetivo difícil de alcanzar, más no imposible. En el 2021 cerraron con cuatro victorias consecutivas para colarse a la ronda de comodines. Ahora, ya ganaron el primero de sus últimos cuatro juegos de la campaña y a continuación tendrán una cita en Kansas City ante los Jefes el día de Navidad, donde buscarán dar la campanada para que esa llama siga encendida.
