Los Oakland Raiders celebraron un día familiar durante la practica del domingo en Napa y en conjunto lamentaron la partida de una leyenda de la Nación Raider, Cliff Branch, quien falleció el sábado.
Branch jugó 14 años con los Raiders, tanto en Oakland como en Los Ángeles, durante los cuales registró 501 recepciones para 8,685 yardas y 67 touchdowns.
"Quiero mencionar que vamos a extrañar a Cliff Branch," dijo Jon Gruden, Entrenador en Jefe de los Raiders después de la práctica del domingo. "Es una gran perdida para los Raiders, para el football y para todos lo que lo conocían. Varios de nuestros jugadores le rindieron homenaje hoy y nuestras oraciones están con él y su familia. Es una gran perdida para nosotros."
Como dijo Gruden, varios jugadores, desde Derek Carr hasta Tyrell Williams y Lamarcus Joyner, portaron el #21 durante la practica como homenaje a Branch, una noción que según dijo Gruden, fue idea de ellos.
"Eso so significa que dejó un gran legado," dijo el novato Josh Jacobs. "Eso dice mucho de él y del tipo de persona que era."
La noticia de fallecimiento de Branch se dio poco antes de que la reunión diaria del equipo completo el sábado por la tarde y cuando todo el equipo estuvo reunido, Gruden aprovechó para hablar de Branch y mostrar video del tres veces campeón del Super Bowl.
"Gruden hizo énfasis en la familia y el equipo como familia," explicó Jacobs. "Rendir homenaje a las personas que estuvieron antes que uno y como siempre, en especial a los mejores. Branch fue uno de los mejores receptores que no está en el Salón de la Fama…es una situación muy triste."
"Creo que fue bueno," añadió Gruden. "Cuando estás en un equipo de la NFL, puedes hacer referencia al pasado para mejorar el futuro. A veces puedes recurrir a esos jugadores. Hemos tenido a Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes y muchos más en nuestras reuniones ayudándonos, pero creo que el respeto es lo principal, tan solo respetar a los jugadores que estuvieron antes que uno."
Mas que cualquier otro equipo en la NFL, los Raiders valoran su historia y los jugadores que la forjaron para la generación actual.
Ese es un ideal que se estableció desde la cúspide de la franquicia y que también es cercano a la mentalidad de Gruden.
"Es un buen amigo," dijo Gruden de Branch. "Es un buen amigo propio y lo ha sido por años y un buen amigo de todos. Nunca ví a Cliff Branch decaído. Siempre estaba de buen animo, un gran jugador, pero creo que nuestros jugadores tienen un gran respeto por quien fue."
Cliff Branch tenia 71 años.
