What They're Saying: Chargers' Derwin James has 'a lot of respect' for Ashton Jeanty

Take a look at what Chargers players and coaches had to say ahead of Monday's matchup.

On Head Coach Pete Carroll:

"He's a great coach. One of the best. A lot of respect. I always thought that if I had every played for him on one of his teams – because he was coaching when I was playing – or was on his staff once I got into coaching, I bet we would've been really good friends. I learned a lot from him just watching him, but he's just always been on the other side. When I was a player, he was a defensive coordinator or head coach somewhere. Then when i was coaching, we were trying to gouge each other's eyes out. ... It's competition at the highest level, it's what he's all about. Pretty enthusiastic, too, I've noticed. Nothing but respect for that. Same person, same coach every day. Nothing but respect for that and does a tremendous job." – Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh

"You always know a Pete Carroll coached team. You better be at your best and they're going to bring the best out of you." – Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman

On the Raiders as a whole:

"I see a team that's hungry. They have a lot of life over there. ... I know everybody's fired up and everybody loves playing for Pete so I know they're going to play hard for him." – Chargers safety Derwin James Jr.

On QB Geno Smith:

"Geno's a great player. He's always been, I think, kind of underrated in the NFL. His ability to throw the football, stand in the pocket. He can make every throw. Great, really accurate passer." – Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter

"I see a guy that's a leader, man. He's leading that group and they're playing some great football." – Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack

"He's a good quarterback. Once he gets in his rhythm, he can make the throws. Being able to get his guys the ball, he does a great job with that." – Chargers safety Derwin James Jr.

On RB Ashton Jeanty:

"A lot of respect for him. He's earned a right to be a top 10 pick. I feel like when you go that high, they're not drafting you to not come in and play, so I feel like he's earned every right he's got. Excited to play him. He's a great young back and I can't wait to play against him." – Chargers safety Derwin James Jr.

"You can see it on the film, he's a physical back. ... It's another great challenge for this defense to go out and play physical football against another physical running back and physical team." – Chargers outside linebacker Khalil Mack

On Brock Bowers:

"Brock's an elite weapon. We've seen it now a few times. Your hands are full when he's out there. He's a receiver, he's tight end, he's an electric athlete. Yards after the catch, catch and run, he can do all that." – Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter

"Probably the best tight end in the league now, I can say that. One of the best. Fast, can run all the routes. A great young player." – Chargers safety Derwin James Jr.

On the Raiders defense:

"A lot of Pete's background shows up. A lot of Coach Graham's does as well. You really have to prepare for both, all things that we haven't seen." – Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh

"They've got Patrick Graham, who's an outstanding coordinator in this league, and then you throw in Pete Carroll. It's a dangerous blend there. Very unpredictable of what might come up. Lots of respect for how well they're coached." – Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman

On DE Maxx Crosby:

"One of the best in the business. A game-wrecker, as we like to call him." – Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman
